Setup Schedules for Downloading Updates

1. From the CommCell Browser, right-click on the CommServe computer node, and click All Tasks point to Add/Remove Software and click Download Software.
2. Click OK.
4. Select Schedule and click the Configure button.

  • Type a name for the schedule in the Schedule Name box.
  • Click Weekly.
  • In the Start Time box type or select the schedule start time.
  • Click to select the days of the week.
  • Click the Options button to configure Advance options.
6.
  • Specify Range of recurrence.
  • Specify Repeat to run the job repeatedly on the day in which the job is scheduled to run.
  • Select Time Zone from drop-down list.
  • Click OK.

Setup Schedules for Installing Updates

1. From the CommCell Browser, right-click the CommServe icon, click All Tasks, Add/Remove Software and click Install Updates. `
2. Select Client Computers.
3. Select Reboot Client to have the system automatically reboot the client and/or MediaAgent computers if a reboot is required.
4. Click Schedule and click the Configure button.
5.
  • Type a name for the schedule in the Schedule Name box.
  • Click Weekly.
  • In the Start Time box type or select the schedule start time.
  • Click to select the days of the week.
  • Click the Options button to configure Advance options.

  • Specify Range of recurrence.
  • Specify Repeat to run the job repeatedly on the day in which the job is scheduled to run.
  • Select Time Zone from drop-down list.
  • Click OK.

Setup Alternate FTP Locations to Download Updates

Follow the steps described below to setup an alternate FTP location to download and host the updates if you have your own FTP site, or if you need to reroute the FTP transfer through an FTP proxy.

1. From the CommCell Browser, click Control Panel and then double-click the Add/Remove Software Configuration.

  • Select Use FTP Proxy For Operations.
  • Click FTP Proxy Settings button.
3.
  • Specify FTP Proxy Hostname and select Use Username and password checkbox to provide credential for FTP Proxy site.
  • Click OK.
  • In the Add/Remove Software Configuration dialog box, Click OK.

Setup HTTP Locations to Download Updates

Follow the steps described below to configure the HTTP proxy server to connect to the FTP server if you have an HTTP location you wish to use as a proxy server to download updates to your FTP location.

  Install Software from the CommCell Console does not support downloading packages from HTTP Proxy.
1. From the CommCell Browser, click Control Panel and then double-click the Add/Remove Software Configuration.

  • Select Use HTTP Proxy for FTP Operations.
  • Click HTTP Proxy Settings button.
3.
  • Specify HTTP Proxy Hostname and select Use Username and password checkbox to provide credential for HTTP Proxy site.
  • Click OK.
  • In the Add/Remove Software Configuration dialog box, Click OK.

Setup a Remote Cache

Remote cache will allow you to push the updates to designated client computers in the CommCell. This will be useful if you wish to maintain specific client computers to receive their updates from the update cache and prevent potential software conflicts. Follow the steps described below to configure remote cache:

1. From the CommCell Browser, click Control Panel and then double-click the Add/Remove Software Configuration.

  • Click Remote Software Cache tab.
  • Click Add to configure remote cache.
3.
  • Select Computer that should be designated as the Update Cache.
  • Select Use Local Drive or Use Network Drive to store updates.
  • Verify default location in Cache Directory. Click ... button to modify the default location.
  • Click Add/Remove Clients to associate client computers to receive updates from the configured update cache.
  • Click OK.
 
  • A Restore Only client computer cannot be designated as the Update Cache.
  • You cannot choose a network drive as an update cache for computers that have Workstation Backup Agent installed.
  • You cannot add a computer that does not have the Simpana software installed.
4. Click OK.

Install updates to Specific Clients/MediaAgent

1. From the CommCell Browser, right-click the <client computer>, navigate to All Tasks | Add/Remove Software and click Install Updates. `
  From the CommCell Browser, navigate to Storage Resources | MediaAgents right-click <mediaagent>, navigate to All Tasks | Add/Remove Software and click Install Updates.
2. Select Reboot Client.
  In deduplication environments, for MediaAgents hosting the deduplication store, all the deduplication transactions in the memory must be completed before the reboot. See Rebooting a MediaAgent Hosting the Deduplication Store for instructions.
4. Select Ignore Running Jobs to install updates on client/MediaAgent even if jobs are currently running.
5.
  • Click Job Initiation tab.

    By default Immediate option is selected.

  • Click OK.
6. You can track the progress of the job from the Job Controller window.

Setup specific Clients/MediaAgent to not receive automatic updates

1. From the CommCell Browser, right-click the CommServe icon, click All Tasks | Add/Remove Software | Install Updates. `
2. Clear client computer to not receive updates.

  • Click Job Initiation tab.

    By default Immediate option is selected.

  • Click OK.
5. You can track the progress of the job from the Job Controller window.

Setup Automatic Updates on a Clustered CommServe

1. From the CommCell Browser, right-click the CommServe icon, navigate to All Tasks | Add/Remove Software | Install Updates.
2.
  • Select virtual Client Computer to install the updates.
  • Select Ignore Running Jobs.
3.
  • Click Job Initiation tab.

    By default Immediate option is selected.

  • Click OK.
4. You can track the progress of the job from the Job Controller window.
5. To install Automatic Updates on a passive node, fail over to the node and then repeat this procedure.  

Setup Copy Software

Setup a Copy Software if a connection cannot be made to the FTP source site for downloading the updates. When Copy Software job is run, it contacts the CommServe to obtain the operating system information of the clients installed and copies the updates to the CommServe's Cache directory.

1. From the CommCell Browser, right-click on the CommServe node, navigate to All Tasks | Add/Remove Software and click Copy Software.
2. By default the Copy Updates is selected.

In the Copy Software From Location box, type the path to the required service pack or update file (.exe or .tar) that you want to copy.

Alternatively, you can click Browse to select the folder that contains service pack or update file and then manually type the name of the service pack or update file (.exe or .tar) that you want to copy.

  This directory must reside on a local drive.
3. Synchronize Remote Software Cache is selected by default to automatically receive the updates from the CommServe update cache when updates are downloaded to the CommServe.

  • Click Job Initiation tab.

    By default Immediate option is selected.

  • Click OK.

CopyToCache Tool

CopyToCache is a stand-alone tool residing on the CommServe computer that provides you with the ability to push the software from a network share that contains the packages downloaded from the customer support Web site to the designated CommServe Cache directory. This can be especially useful if a connection cannot be made to the FTP source site for downloading packages.

Use the following steps to run the CopyToCache tool:

  1. Log on to CommServe computer.
  2. From Windows Explorer, navigate to <Software_Installation_directory>/Base folder and run CopyToCache.exe.
  3. In the Update Location box, type the path to the software package, updates or service pack file (.exe or .tar) that should be copied to the CommServe Software Cache directory.

    Depending upon the Copy Option, provide the following paths in the Update Location:

    • For Packages - navigate to Software Installation Package (For example, Disc 1).
        You should copy Disc 1 (for Windows) and Disc 3 (for Unix). These are the only Discs that must be copied to the CommServe software cache location; do not copy any other Disc to this location.
    • For Service Pack or Updates - type the path to the service pack or update file (.exe or .tar) that you want to copy.

    The current CommServe Software Cache directory location is displayed in the Cache Location box.

  4. From Copy Options, select one of the following options:
    • Copy Updates - to copy updates or service pack
    • Copy Packages - to copy the software packages
  5. Click Copy.
  6. The status of the Copy process is displayed in the Status.

Once the copy process is complete, you can navigate to the CommServe Software Cache directory to verify the latest packages or updates that are copied.
