List Media for a Backup Set or Instance

You can list media associated with the following:

  • (Default) The latest data protection cycle, starting from the latest full backup.
  • Data protection operations performed between a time range.
  • A storage policy copy, by specifying the copy precedence number.

Note: When you search media for a secondary copy, the listed media may not reflect the entire instance or backup set data, unless all the storage policies associated with all the subclients have been configured for secondary copies.

Procedure

  1. From the CommCell Browser, expand Client Computers > client > agent.
  2. Right-click a backup set, and then click All Tasks > Browse and Restore.
  3. Click List Media.
  4. Ensure that List Media for restore within specified time range is selected.
  5. Click OK.

The appropriate media appears in the Media dialog box.

Note: For Indexing Version 2, if the index backup or action log backups are located in a different data library than the data backup, then the table in the Media dialog box will be comprised of two separate rows, one for each data library.

List Media Associated with Index

You can use List Media to predict the media required to restore the index required for browsing data.

This feature is useful when the index is not currently in the index cache, and you need it, such as when generating the Job Summary report. By using List Media, you can ensure that the required media are ready for the system to automatically restore the index.

Procedure

  1. From the CommCell Browser, expand Client Computers > client > agent.
  2. Right-click a backup set, and then click All Tasks > Browse and Restore.
  3. Click List Media.
  4. Select List Media containing index required for browse.
  5. Click OK.

The appropriate media appears in the Media dialog box.

Note: For Indexing Version 2, if the index backup or action log backups are located in a different data library than the data backup, then the table in the Media dialog box will be comprised of two separate rows, one for each data library.

List Media for Specific Files and/or Folders

This operation is also known as List Media Precise and is useful to precisely predict media in which specific files or folders reside. For example:

  • When a data protection operation spans across multiple media and you would like to know the exact media in which the files you wish to restore reside.
  • You have a specific set of files (either a random set or a specific set, such as *.doc or *.txt) that you wish to restore and would like to know the all the media in which the files reside.
  • You wish to restore a specific version of the file and would like to know the specific media in which the version resides.

Procedure

  1. From the CommCell Browser, expand Client Computers > client > agent.
  2. Right-click a backup set, and then click All Tasks > Browse and Restore.
  3. From the Browse and Restore Options window, click View Content.
  4. From the Client client (Latest Data) window, expand the tree, and then navigate to and select the files and/or folders that you wish to restore.
  5. Click List Media and Size.

Note: Filters are not considered when predicting media at the subclient level or backup set level.

The List Media dialog box appears. The details of the media needed for a restore operation are shown, including the total space required on the destination disk to restore the selected data.

Note: For Indexing Version 2, if the index backup or action log backups are located in a different data library than the data backup, then the table in the List Media dialog box will be comprised of two separate rows, one for each data library.

List Media for Specific Jobs

The Restore by Jobs feature lets you restore data that was written by a specific data protection operation. You can use List Media to show the media associated with the restore job to be run.

Procedure

  1. From the CommCell Browser, expand Client Computers > client > agent.
  2. Right-click a backup set, then click All Tasks > Restore by Jobs.
  3. In the Restore by Jobs filter dialog box, confirm the settings, then click OK.
  4. From the Backup Job History window, right-click a job, then click View Media.

The Media Used By Job ID dialog box shows all media used for that backup job.

Note: For Indexing Version 2, if the index backup or action log backups are located in a different data library than the data backup, then the table in the Media Used By Job ID dialog box will be comprised of two separate rows, one for each data library.

Other Supported List Media Operations

You can also see the media required, and in some cases other information such as restore size, in these cases:

  • From Find results. Select the file or folder, then click the List Media and Size button.
  • From Browse or Find results connected with backup jobs as shown in the Backup History window. Right-click the job and click View Media.
  • From a running restore job. Right-click the job and click View Media.

Recall Media

The Recall Media feature lets you temporarily bring media back from an export location for a specific operation, then return the media to that location when the operation is complete. This is useful if you have exported media to another location with the intention of keeping the media at the export location for an established period of time, but need to bring the media back from the export location for a specific purpose (such as a data recovery operation) prior to the original return date.

See Recall Media.
