Repair Client Installations

You can now repair Commvault installations on any Windows client from the CommCell Console, even when you cannot reach the client because of problems with the CVD service. Repair operations are useful when binary corruptions or service corruptions occur on the client.

Cloud MediaAgent Power Management

You can enable power management for MediaAgents that are hosted in the cloud.

When you enable power management, the system automatically turns on the MediaAgent for various operations. After an operation is complete, the system turns off the MediaAgent.

Power management decreases costs, because the virtual machines are automatically turned off when they are not used.

Support for Additional Settings at the User, User Groups, and Domain Levels

You can set CommServDB.Console additional settings at the user, user group, and domain levels. This gives administrators the ability to fine tune options such as a user's access to a feature.

You can monitor Markets in Financial Instruments Directive (MiFID) logs in your environment using a MiFID log monitoring policy. You associate the file system agent subclient that contains MiFID logs with the MiFID log monitoring policy. You use the Log Monitoring application to analyze the logs.

Support for Data Interface Pairs (DIPs) for Client Groups

Data Interface Pairs (DIPs) are now supported between a client group and individual client computers.

DIP support for client groups reduces the administrative effort required if, for example, you want a group of clients to all use a particular high-speed network interface on a MediaAgent to transmit data. In enterprise environments, you can set up one MediaAgent to transmit large Reference Copy jobs to other multiple MediaAgents simultaneously.

Ability to Access Windows Endpoints Through Commvault Tunnels

Commvault software now includes VPN Router and VPN Client capabilities that can reduce both the footprint needed for remote access and your administrative burden. The software that you already use to securely protect and manage your data now controls network access services, too.

This release adds two new VPN features:

  • VPN Router: Assign one or more computers in your CommCell group as VPN routers. Computers configured this way operate as a VPN gateway, allowing external computers to access internal networked resources.
  • VPN Client: Use the CommCell Console to set up routing rules for a Windows client computer that control how that client connects to another client through a VPN Router. Additional software may be required on Windows clients.

Deploying Commvault VPN may also reduce your licensing costs by replacing your current third-party VPN solution.

Ability to Hide MediaAgents That Have No Libraries in the CommCell Console

You can hide MediaAgents that have no libraries and that are under the Storage Resources node in the CommCell Browser.

This ability is useful for hiding MediaAgents that have only MediaAgent binaries, such as clients that are configured for block-level backup operations or IntelliSnap backup operations.

When you hide a MediaAgent, you cannot select the MediaAgent for CommCell operations, such as backup operations, browse operations, restore operations, and auxiliary copy operations.

Ability to Hide Libraries in the CommCell Console

You can hide libraries that are under the Storage Resources node in the CommCell Browser. When you hide a library, you cannot select the library during other operations, such as when you create a storage policy or when you select a data path. This option is useful for hiding libraries that are waiting for data to be aged-off after being disabled for write.

Oracle RAC Policy-Based Management

In an Oracle RAC policy-based configuration, the resources run in a shared infrastructure. The infrastructure consists of a server stack that is logically split into groups that are referred to as server pools. Each pool can contain one or more servers.  In this configuration, instances run a respective node. The policy-based Oracle RAC Cluster configuration detects when an instance cannot be restarted on the same node due to a fault or failure and automatically relocates the instance to another node in the same server pool. Redirect Restore for PostgreSQL

You can perform a redirect restore operation to redirect all PostgreSQL tablespaces and databases to a different path in the destination client.

You can run a redirect restore operation when the current path has run out of space and you want to redirect the data directory to a different location, or for troubleshooting. You can redirect an entire PostgreSQL database (all tablespaces) to a new client.

Changing the staging location in the CommCell Console when you restore from a secondary copy

When you perform a restore operation from a secondary copy that has the Combined Stream option enabled, the restored data is temporarily staged at the Job Results folder before it is restored to a SQL server.

To change the staging location, from the SQL Server Properties dialog box, select the Staging Location for Restores check box, and then type or browse to the new staging location path.

Verify that you have enough space at the staging location for the data that you are restoring.

Upgrade Support for SAP Archive Link Clients

By default, deleted items are tracked during an incremental backup job. This tracking might increase the time that it takes to run an incremental backup or increase the amount of disk space that is required.

Backup copy operations for IntelliSnap backups can now use any Virtual Server Agent (VSA) proxy to mount a snapshot datastore on a proxy ESX server and create a backup copy. If SAN transport is available, any VSA proxy can use SAN transport mode to copy backup data and create the backup copy.

Cross-vCenter Mounts for VMware Backups

You can now choose an ESX server in a different vCenter from the source VM to mount snapshots for VMware backups. With this option, you can complete backups sucessfully when an ESX server is not available (for example, when the server is undergoing maintenance).

When restoring a virtual machine disk and attaching it to an existing virtual machine, you can rename the disk. If no disk name is specified, the disk is automatically renamed to match the name of the target VM. If necessary, a numeric suffix is added to ensure that the disk name is unique.

Agentless Restores Using the Web Console

End users can restore small guest files and folders from virtual machine backups to a virtual machine owned by the same user without having the Virtual Server Agent installed on the destination machine. Using this option simplifies deployment and reduces the impact of backup and restore operations for virtual machines that do not have high transaction rates and large data requirements. This option is preferred in cases where the CommServe system or MediaAgent is not able to communicate with the VM (for example, in a restricted network). 

This feature is enabled by default.

VM Lifecycle Management for Oracle Cloud

VM Lifecycle Management for Oracle Cloud provides virtual machine users with the ability to create and manage their own virtual machines from a user-friendly interface. Administrators set up pre-defined templates to control configuration settings, such as disk space, and to effectively manage resources. After a template is created, end users can build and customize their own Oracle Cloud virtual machines in the Virtual Machines application on the Web Console.

Skipping Page or Swap File Sectors During VMware or Microsoft Hyper-V Backups

When backing up a virtual disk for a virtual machine, you can skip backing up the Windows page file or Linux swap file. You can enable this option to reduce the size of backups for the virtual disk on storage media. Rule-Based VM Network Reconfiguration

When you restore a full VM to vSphere, or when you configure Live Sync to replicate a VM, you can create a network mapping that enables you to connect to an appropriate network at the destination site. 

For each of the network adapters on the source VM, you can map a source network to a destination network that will be used when the VM is restored or replicated. 

VM Owner Identification for vCloud

In addition to identifying virtual machine owners based on vCenter roles and privileges, Commvault now identifies vCloud users and groups as VM owners. If the Auto Detect VM Owner option is selected in the Advanced Options tab of the subclient properties, the following users and groups are automatically assigned as VM owners:

  • Owner of the vApp or catalog that contains the VM
  • All users who have Full Control permissions to the vApp or catalog that contains the VM
  • All users and groups that are assigned the Organization Administrator role

vCloud users are mapped with Commvault users if a user entry with the same name is defined in Commvault. Groups imported from an LDAP source are mapped to external groups defined for a domain in Commvault.

Application-Aware Backups for Oracle VM

You can use Commvault software to perform application-aware backup operations for virtual machines that run under Oracle VM and that host the following applications:

  • Oracle database for Windows or Linux (standalone databases only)
  • Microsoft SQL Server
  • Microsoft Exchange
  • Microsoft SharePoint

Application-aware backup operations capture the state of application data at the time of the backup, including data in memory and pending transactions, which makes restoring the application for continued use easier. An application-aware backup operation for an instance quiesces the application, flushes its memory, completes pending write operations, and then creates a snapshot of application data. After the snapshot is created, the application resumes.

This feature is supported only for streaming backups.

Synthetic Full Backup Support for IntelliSnap

Synthetic full backups can now be performed on IntelliSnap-enabled subclients for VMware and Microsoft Hyper-V. A synthetic full backup is a synthesized full backup that is created from the most recent full backup and subsequent incremental or differential backups. The resulting synthetic full backup is identical to a full backup for the subclient. Unlike full, incremental, and differential backups, a synthetic full backup does not actually transfer data from a client computer to the backup media and does not use any resources on the client computer.

Live Mount is used to validate backups to determine whether they are suitable for disaster recovery operations, to verify the content of backups, or to access data from the virtual machine directly instead of restoring guest files. 

You can perform Live Mount operations from streaming, IntelliSnap, and backup copy jobs.


  • Virtual machines that are live mounted are intended for short term usage and should not be used for production.
  • Changes to live mounted virtual machines or their data are not retained.
  • Live Mount is currently supported with a non-persistent snap engine (NetApp).

After a subclient or the subclient’s content is deleted and all its jobs are pruned, the cleanup of OCUM datasets and dataset members that correspond with Commvault subclients and subclient members feature deletes the OnCommand Unified Manager (OCUM) dataset or dataset members, and the subscription context or subscription context members.

Previously, you could not delete members from a dataset or a subscription context using the Commvault software. These items were deleted when the storage policy copy was deleted. However, unused secondary volumes were still retained until the storage service cleanup, which could cause unexpected space consumption on the secondary copy and conformance errors during the auxiliary copy operation.

To use this feature, you must configure certain Media Management parameters.

The Cleanup of OCUM feature is supported for new installations of Commvault software starting with version 11 SP3. There is no support for upgraded clients.
