Running Accelerated Synthetic Full Backup (DASH Full)

Accelerated Synthetic full backups, or DASH Full backups, have these advantages:

  • Data copy performance is improved because data signatures are copied instead of the data itself.
  • Less space is consumed on storage media, since less data is transferred.

Before You Begin

  • A disk library must be configured.
  • A storage policy must be created.

Procedure

  1. Enable DASH Full (Read Optimized Synthetic Full) in the Storage Policy Copy:
    1. From the CommCell Browser, expand Policies > Storage Policies > storage_policy.
    2. Right-click the primary storage policy copy displayed in the right pane, then click Properties.
    3. On the Deduplication tab, click the Advanced tab.
    4. Select Enable DASH Full (Read Optimized Synthetic Full), then click OK.
  2. Associate Subclients to the Storage Policy Copy:
    1. From the CommCell Browser, expand Client Computers > client > File System > defaultBackupSet.
    2. Right-click the subclient, then click Properties.
    3. Click the Storage Device tab.
    4. In the Storage Policy list, select a storage policy where DASH full is enabled, then click OK.
  3. Run a Full Backup.
  4. Run an Accelerated Synthetic Full Backup:
    1. From the CommCell Browser, expand Client Computers > client > File System > defaultBackupSet.
    2. Right-click the subclient, then click Backup.
    3. From the Backup Options for subclient dialog box, under Select Backup Type, select Synthetic Full.

      By default, Run Incremental Backup box and Before Synthetic Full are selected.

    4. Click OK.
  5. You can track the progress of the job in the Job Controller window. Ensure that the job completes successfully.
    1. Right click the job and click Details.
    2. Click the Progress tab.

    Transferred Data Size on Network displays the amount of data sent over the network.
