License Requirements - Virtual Server Agent for Microsoft Hyper-V

By default, the agent uses an Evaluation license. After the evaluation period is complete, you need to obtain a permanent license from your Software Provider.

You can choose to use one of the following licensing mechanisms:

  • Traditional License, based upon products and features in your CommCell.
  • Capacity License, based on the amount of data you want to protect.
  • Client Access License, based on the number of virtual machines or CPU sockets.

For comprehensive information on licensing, see License Administration.

Traditional License

The following license type is required for the Hyper-V Virtual Server Agent.

Agent or Component

License Type

Virtual Server Agent

Virtual Server

You must obtain a license for each Virtualization client (pseudo-clients and stand-alone clients).

Capacity License

If you plan to use capacity licenses, you must obtain the following license:

License Type

License Consumption

1 license per CommCell for n Terabytes (TB) of protected data

For information on capacity license usage calculation for virtual machine backup jobs, see Capacity License - FAQ.

Client Access Licenses

The following licenses are available for virtual machines:

License Type

License Consumption

Virtual Machines

1 license per protected virtual machine

Protected Virtual Machines

1 license per protected virtual machine

CPU Sockets on Hypervisor Hosts

1 license per CommCell for n number of sockets

The Virtual Machines license is used with traditional agent-based licensing.

The Protected Virtual Machines and CPU Sockets on Hypervisor Hosts licenses provide alternative methods of virtual machine licensing. If you apply either of these licenses on a CommCell environment monitored by capacity licenses, Virtual Server Agent jobs will not count towards capacity, causing the capacity usage to decrease.
