Index Server FAQ
What happens if the Exchange Mailbox Agent index server is lost?
- Browse, search, and restore will not work.
- If you perform a full index reconstruction, the status of the content indexed data is lost, and the data must be content indexed again. All data, including User/Journal mailbox archived data, is retained.
To preserve the indexes and the content index status, back up the Exchange Mailbox Agent index servers.
If the index server is backed up and you need to rebuild the index, the average restore throughput is 300 GB/hour. If the index server is not backed up and you need to perform a full index reconstruction, the action logs must be played back to the index server. In this case, the average reconstruction statistics are 100 million documents in 24 hours if the index server follows the recommended hardware specifications.
For information about deploying a high availability index server, see Index Server Cloud.
