Considerations When Editing Case Options

Consider the following when editing the options of an existing case.

Options that Cannot be Edited

The following options cannot be edited after a case has been created:

  • Under Basic Details, the Create a legal copy option cannot be changed.
  • If Create a legal copy is selected, you cannot change the storage policy associated to the case.

Editing Filters in a Case

If a case has Create a legal copy selected, then edits to the case filters will only affect future data collections. Changes to the case filters will not be applied retroactively to data that has already been collected in a case.

Adding Custodians to an Existing Case

When editing a case, you have the option to add or remove custodians. However, if Create a legal copy is selected and data has already been collected for the case, then newly added custodians will only have their data collected from the time when they were added to the case, not from the time when the case was created. If you need to add custodians to an existing case, we recommend that you create a new case for the additional custodians.

Removing Custodians from a Case

When editing a case, you can add or remove custodians. However, if custodians are removed from a case, then their data will be aged as follows:

  • If Create a legal copy is selected, case data will be pruned according to retention settings of the storage policy associated to the case.
  • If Create a legal copy is not selected, data will be pruned according to the storage policy associated to the asset’s backup source.
