Analyzing Web Data in Basic Reports

The following table lists different categories available in Basic reports:

Category Tab

Description

Visitor

The types of user, such as new user or returning user. Users are categorized as new or returning depending on whether they have visited the website during the selected date range. Visitors are identified based on the presence of a browser cookie.

Analysis: Identify whether the website needs to aim for more returning visitors or new visitors.

Browser

The type of browser that the visitors used to visit the website, such as Microsoft Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and so on. You can select a specific browser type to find browser version information. For example, if you select internet explorer (IE), you can discover which specific versions of IE–IE9, IE10, IE11, and so on.–visitors are using to access your site.

Analysis: Identify how the website performs in terms of the search functionality or site speed with different browsers.

Screen Resolution

The screen resolutions that visitors used while visiting the website.

Browser Language

The browser language that was used while visiting the website.

Device

The type of device used to visit the website. This can be a desktop, a laptop, and so on.

Country

The country where the website is used.

Analysis: Correlate visitors and their actions across different geographical distributions.

Operating System

The operating system of the device used to visit the website.

You can use the Filter pane to cross segment the data received for a particular report category with other categories. Use this data to infer visitors’ behavior relative to the user type, browser used, languages used, devices used, and geographical distribution.

Example: Analyzing Visitor Data

In the example in which a report is displayed for the Visitor category, you can analyze the report as follows:

When you select the Chrome check box in the Filter pane, the grid view lists the number of new users and returning users who used Google Chrome to visit the website. The chart view displays the associated percentage for new users and returning users.

The data for other categories in the Filter pane also changes based on the option that you select. The Filter pane shows the following:

  • The number of times a language was used for the Google Chrome sessions when visiting the website. For example, out of 12756 Google Chrome sessions, the en_us language was used in 8986 sessions. When you select the en_us check box, the report displays the number of new users and returning users using the language.
  • The number of times a screen resolution was used for a Google Chrome session when visiting the website. When you select a screen resolution check box, the report displays the number of new users and returning users who used the selected screen resolution.
  • The device on which Google Chrome was used to visit the website.

When you select a check box in the Filter pane, the chart view or the grid view displays the statistics relative to the Category tab that you selected.
