Run the CommCell Console as a Stand-Alone Application - Windows

Before you Begin

To run the CommCell Console as a Stand-Alone Application on a Windows computer:

  1. Launch the CommCell Console from the Start | Programs menu, or by clicking the CommCell Console icon on your desktop.
  2. Enter the User Name, Password, and name of the CommCell you wish to connect to.

    Click OK to continue.

  3. If you have not activated the license yet, you will receive a reminder prompt to do so.

    Click OK to continue.

In a few moments, the CommCell Console will open.


Run the CommCell Console as a Stand-Alone Application - Macintosh

Before you Begin

To run the CommCell Console as a Stand-Alone Application on a Macintosh computer:

  1. Log on as a root user to the Macintosh computer that has the CommCell Console (stand-alone application version) installed.
  2. From a Terminal window, type qinetix and press Return. The Connect to CommCell window is displayed.
  3. From the Connect to CommCell window, type a valid user name and password for the CommCell in the User Name and Password fields. Then type the name of the CommCell in the CommCell field. If you had previously logged on to the CommCell Console and are logging back in, select the CommCell name from the appropriate list. Click OK to log in.

In a few moments, the CommCell Console will open.


Run the CommCell Console as a Stand-Alone Application in a Specific Language

Before you Begin

To access the CommCell Console as a Stand-Alone Application in a specific language, you need the following:

  1. Edit the CommCell Console Stand-Alone Application shortcut.
  2. Right-click on the shortcut, and select Properties.
  3. Edit the Target field with the appropriate ISO Language and Country codes.
  4. Double-click the shortcut to run the application.

Run the CommCell Console as a Remote Web-Based Application - Windows

Before you Begin

To access the CommCell Console as a Remote Web-Based Application, you need the following:

  1. Open a Java-enabled web browser from any computer with which the CommServe is accessible.
  2. Type the URL of the CommServe in the browser.

    By default, the URL is: http://<CommServe_name>/<web_alias>.

    If you are using the IIS of an alternate computer, the default URL is http://<name of computer with IIS installed>/<web_alias>.

    Note that the alternate computer must have IIS and the CommCell Console installed and the IIS Server settings must be configured to use the alternate computer's IIS server.

  3. The first time you attempt to access the CommServe remotely, the system will check to see whether the Java plug-in is installed. If it is not, you will be given the option to download and install it. 
  4. When prompted by the Java plug-in installation window, select the desired location and then follow the instructions to download and install it. 
  5. If prompted to use the Java plug-in as your default JRE, click Yes.

    In a few moments, the Connect To CommCell window appears.

  1. Open a Java-enabled web browser from any computer with which the CommServe is accessible.
  2. Type the URL of the CommServe in the browser.

    By default, the URL is: http://<CommServe_name>/<web_alias>

    If you are using the IIS of an alternate computer, the default URL is http://<name of computer with IIS installed>/<web_alias>.

    Note that the alternate computer must have IIS and the CommCell Console installed and the IIS Server settings must be configured to use the alternate computer's IIS server.

  3. Click Yes if you wish to create Desktop and Start menu shortcuts for the CommCell Console.

    These shortcuts will allow you to subsequently access the CommCell Console by either clicking the Desktop icon or navigating to the software's folder in the Start | Programs menu.

    If you do not wish to create these shortcuts, click No.

    Note that this option will only appear the first time you remotely access the CommCell Console from that computer.

  4. In the Welcome dialog box, type the username, password, and CommServe name.

    In a few moments, the CommCell Console will be displayed.


Run the CommCell Console as a Remote Web-Based Application - Linux

Before you Begin

To access the CommCell Console as a Remote Web-Based Application, you need the following:

  1. Make a symlink to /usr/java/j*/jre/plug-ins/i386/ns610/libjavaplugin_oji.so in the mozilla1.0.1 plug-in directory.
  2. From any computer on the network, open a Java-enabled Web browser. 
  3. Type the URL of the CommServe in the browser.
  4. The first time you attempt to access the CommServe remotely, the software will check to see whether the plug-in is installed. If it is not, you will be given the option to download and install it. 
  5. When prompted by the Java plug-in installation window, select the location, and then follow instructions to download and install it. 
  6. If prompted to use the Java plug-in as your default JRE, click Yes. In a few moments, the Connect To CommCell window appears.

Add or Remove Tool Bars

To add or remove toolbars:

  1. From the CommCell Console, select Tools | Control Panel.
  2. From the Control Panel, select User Preferences, and then select the View tab.
  3. To enable, select Display Status Bar, Standard Toolbar, and Display Floating Restore Progress Bar on Submission of Restore Job as desired.

Navigate Console Windows

To navigate CommCell Console Windows

  1. From the CommCell Console, open the Windows menu.
  2. If you prefer to see only one window at a time, select Next or Previous to scroll through the open windows or alternatively, select Windows....
  3. From the Activate Window dialog box, select the desired window and click Activate.
  4. If you prefer to see multiple windows together, select Cascade, or the Tile commands to rearrange the windows within the main window.

In addition, you can navigate through open CommCell Console windows using the ctrl+tab function.


Open a Console Window

To open the CommCell Browser, Job Controller or Event Viewer window:

  1. From the CommCell Console, select Tools and the desired window.
  2. Alternatively, click the desired icon from the toolbar.

Select an Interface Style

To select a CommCell Console Windows Style

  1. From the CommCell Console, select Tools | Control Panel.
  2. From the Control Panel, select User Preferences, and then select the View tab.
  3. From the GUI Look and Feel Style box, select the desired style.

Select the Default Windows to Display Upon Login

  1. From the Tools menu in the CommCell Console, click Control Panel.
  2. Select User Preferences from the Control Panel. The User Preferences dialog box is displayed.
  3. Select the Custom Preferences tab.
  4. Select the appropriate options to save the settings for the CommCell Browser, Job Controller, Event Viewer windows. You can also choose to save the settings for All windows.
  5. Click OK to save your changes.

    The CommCell Console will remember the window display preferences used on your next logout and retain those preferences for your subsequent login.

Change the Default Event Viewer Display

To change the default Event Viewer display:

  1. From the CommCell Console, select Tools | Control Panel.
  2. From the Control Panel, select User Preferences.
  3. From the Event Filter tab, select the severity level(s) that you want to use as the default.
  4. Type the maximum number of events to be displayed in the Event Viewer (Default = 200).
  5. Click OK to save your changes.

Change Table Views

To change the table views for the Job Controller and Event Viewer:

  1. From the Job Controller or Event Viewer windows in the CommCell Console, perform either of the following:

    The available options for that window are displayed.

  2. Select or deselect the parameters you want presented in the respective window.

Find a Window Entity

To find an entity in a window:

  1. From the CommCell Console, while focus in on either the Job Controller or Event Viewer window, perform either of the following:

    The Find option is displayed at the bottom of the menu.

  2. Click Find.

    A space to enter the entity you wish to find appears at the bottom of the associated window.

  3. Type the entity you wish to find in the space provided.

If the entity exists in the associated window, it will be highlighted.


Filter the Contents of a Window

To filter the contents of a window:

  1. From the CommCell Console, while focus in on either the Job Controller or Event Viewer window, perform either of the following:

    The Filter option is displayed at the bottom of the menu.

  2. Click Filter.

    An arrow will appear in the upper right hand corner of each field in the associated window.

  3. Click on the arrow for the field containing the entities you wish to filter.

    A pull-down menu with all available entities in the associated field is displayed.

  4. Select the entity by which you wish to filter the window from the menu of available entities.

The window is filtered by the entity selected.


Print the Contents of a Window

To print the contents of a window:

  1. From the CommCell Console, while focus in on either the Job Controller or Event Viewer window, perform either of the following:

    The Print option is displayed at the bottom of the menu.

  2. Click Print.

    A dialog box with the available printers will appear.

  3. Edit the printing options as necessary.
  4. Click OK.

Save the Contents of a Window to a File

To save the contents of a window to a file:

  1. From the CommCell Console, while focus in on either the Job Controller or Event Viewer window, perform either of the following:

    The Save to File option is displayed at the bottom of the menu.

  2. Click Save to File.

    The Save dialog box is displayed.

  3. Navigate to the folder to which you wish to save the file.
  4. Choose a name and format for the file (if you do not wish to use the default name and format).
  5. Click OK.

Email the Contents of a Window

To email the contents of a window:

  1. From the CommCell Console, while focus in on either the Job Controller or Event Viewer window, perform either of the following:

    The Email option is displayed at the bottom of the menu.

  2. Click Email.

    The SMTP Parameters dialog box is displayed.

  3. Enter one or more email addresses to send the contents of the window to.
  4. Modify the SMTP settings, if neccessary.
  5. Click OK.
