Advanced Restores - Exchange Offline Mining Tool (User)

Live Browse replaces the Exchange Offline Mining Tool. For more information, see Recovering Messages from an Offline Exchange Database.

Finding a Message

The Find operation is always performed on a single folder at a time.

Procedure

  1. Open the Exchange Database Mining Tool.

  2. On the Exchange menu, click Open.

    The Import From Configuration File dialog box appears.

  3. Enter the file path and the file name of the Configuration File.

  4. Click OK.

  5. In the left pane, expand Databases > database, and then select a mailbox.

  6. Right-click the appropriate folder, and then click Find.

    The Find Messages dialog box appears.

  7. Enter the appropriate search criteria.

  8. Click Find Now.

    The messages that match your search criteria appear in a list at the bottom of the dialog box.

  9. Select one or more messages.

  10. Right-click the selected messages, and click either of the following:

    • Restore as Msg.

    • Restore To PST.

    The Browse For Restore Location dialog box appears.

  11. In the Restore Location box, enter file path of the restore location.

    For example: C:\offline\restore_1.

    If you restore a single message as an .msg file, you must enter a name for the file.

    If you restore multiple messages as .msg files, the files are named automatically.

    If you restore a single message as a .pst file, you must enter a name for the file.

    If you restore multiple messages to a .pst file, a single .pst file is created. You must enter a name for this file.

  12. Click OK.

In Windows Explorer, you can navigate to the restored .msg file and double-click it to see the contents of the message.

Restoring Messages to a PST File

Notes

  • If you installed the 64-bit version of Microsoft Outlook (recommended), you can restore a mailbox and a folder to a .pst file.

  • If you installed the 32-bit version of Microsoft Outlook, you can only restore a message to a .pst file.

Before You Begin

Make sure that you have access to the Configuration File provided by your administrator.

Procedure

  1. Open the Exchange Database Mining Tool.

  2. On the Exchange menu, click Open.

    The Import From Configuration File dialog box appears.

  3. Enter the file path and the file name of the Configuration File.

  4. Click OK.

  5. In the left pane, expand Databases > database.

  6. Do either of the following:

    • If you are using the 32-bit version of Microsoft Outlook, then select a message.

    • If you are using the 64-bit version of Microsoft Outlook, then select either a mailbox, a folder within a mailbox, or a message within a mailbox.

  7. Right-click the mailbox or folder that you selected, and then click Restore to PST.

    The Browse For Restore Location dialog box appears.

  8. In the Restore Location box, enter file path of the restore location and the file name of the .pst file.

    For example: C:\offline\restore_1\my.pst

  9. Click OK.

You must open the restored .pst file from within Microsoft Outlook.

Restoring Deleted Messages

By default, messages that were deleted from the Deleted Items folder, including messages that were deleted permanently by pressing Shift + Delete, cannot be restored using the Exchange Offline Mining Tool. However, when you enable the nShowNonIPM additional setting, the deleted messages appear in either the folder from which they were deleted originally (Exchange 2007) or in the Recoverable Items folder (Exchange 2010 or 2013). After you enable this additional setting, you can restore the deleted messages.

Displaying Deleted Messages in the Exchange Offline Mining Tool

You must enable the nShowNonIPM additional setting to display deleted messages before you can restore them.

Note

Messages that remain in the Deleted Items folder do not appear in the recoverable items location.

Procedure
  1. From the CommCell Browser, expand Client Computers.

  2. Right-click the client, and then click Properties.

    The Client Computer Properties dialog box appears.

  3. Click Advanced.

    The Advanced Client Properties dialog box appears.

  4. Click the Additional Settings tab.

  5. Click Add.

    The Add Additional Settings dialog box appears.

  6. In the Name box, type nShowNonIPM.

  7. In the Value box, type 1.

  8. Click OK.

Restoring the Deleted Messages
Procedure
  1. Open the Exchange Database Mining Tool.

  2. On the Exchange menu, click Open.

    The Import From Configuration File dialog box appears.

  3. Enter the file path and the file name of the Configuration File.

  4. Click OK.

  5. In the left pane, expand Databases > database > mailbox.

  6. Select the folder where the deleted messages are located.

    • For Exchange 2007, the deleted messages are in the folder from which they were deleted.

      For example, if the message was deleted from the Inbox folder, select the Inbox folder.

    • For Exchange 2010 or 2013, expand Recoverable Items > Deletions.

  7. In the right pane, select one or more messages.

  8. Right-click the selected messages, and then click either of the following:

    • Restore as Msg.

    • Restore To PST.

  9. The Browse For Restore Location dialog box appears.

  10. In the Restore Location box, enter file path of the restore location and the file name of the restored file.

  11. Click OK.

Searching for Messages to Restore

You can search for messages in a mailbox database to restore based on the following fields:

  • Body

  • From

  • To

  • Subject

Before You Begin

Make sure that you have access to the Configuration File provided by your administrator.

Procedure

  1. Open the Exchange Database Mining Tool.

  2. On the Exchange menu, click Open.

    The Import From Configuration File dialog box appears.

  3. Enter the file path and the file name of the Configuration File.

  4. Click OK.

  5. In the left pane, expand Databases > database.

  6. Right-click the appropriate mailbox, and then click Search.

    The Search Mailbox dialog box appears.

  7. In the Search for box, enter a search criteria base on content in the From, To, Subject or Body fields of the message.

    If (+ - && || ! ( ) { } [ ] ^ " ~ * ? : \) characters are present in any of the above mentioned fields, use the backslash (\) as a character escape before these characters.

  8. Click Search.

    The messages that match your search criteria appear in a list at the bottom of the dialog box.

  9. Select one or more messages.

  10. Right-click the selected messages, and then click either of the following:

    • Restore as Msg.

    • Restore To PST.

  11. The Browse For Restore Location dialog box appears.

  12. In the Restore Location box, enter file path of the restore location and the file name of the restored file.

  13. Click OK.

Opening a Message

Before you restore messages, you can open the message and verify the Microsoft Outlook Profile.

Before You Begin

Make sure that you have access to the Configuration File provided by your administrator.

Procedure

  1. Open the Exchange Database Mining Tool.

  2. On the Exchange menu, click Open.

    The Import From Configuration File dialog box appears.

  3. Enter the file path and the file name of the Configuration File.

  4. Click OK.

  5. In the left pane, expand Databases > database > mailbox > folder.

  6. In the right pane, select one or more messages.

  7. Right-click the selected messages, and then click Open Message.

    The messages open in Microsoft Outlook. If you open more than one message, they appear in individual windows.

Viewing a Restored PST File

Procedure

  1. Open Microsoft Outlook.

  2. On the File menu, click Open.

  3. Click Import.

    The Import and Export Wizard appears.

  4. Select Import from another program or file option, and then click Next.

  5. Select Outlook Data File (.pst), and then click Next.

  6. Click Browse and choose the .pst file that was restored, and then click Next.

  7. Do either of the following:

    • Select Import items into the current folder.

      When Import items into the same folder is selected, the data from the imported file is added to the same folder in Outlook if the folder matches. If the folder does not match in Outlook, it will be created.

    • Select Import items into the same folder in, and then select the appropriate folder from the list.

  8. Click Finish.

Customizing the Display

  1. Open the Exchange Database Mining Tool.

  2. On the View menu, click one of the following:

    • Clear All Groups - displays the default view.

    • Reading Pane (Bottom | Right | Off) - Bottom or Right displays the contents of the selected message in the corresponding location of the window. When Off is selected, the contents of the message are not displayed.
