Archiving the Older Jobs in a CommCell Environment

The CommServe database maintains a list of all job operations for each client in the CommCell environment. Over time, the number of job entries in the database increases significantly, which might slow down the database performance, resulting in longer backup and recovery time.

To free up space in the database, use the CommServe Database Long-Term Archiving workflow. The workflow moves the metadata of the old backup jobs for selected clients to a different CommCell environment based on specified criteria. You can use the workflow to archive the metadata of Sybase, Oracle, and Microsoft SQL Server database backups.

The workflow exports the metadata from the source CommCell environment, and then imports the metadata to the destination CommCell environment.

Before You Begin

Register the destination CommCell environment in the source CommCell environment. For instructions, see Registering a Remote CommCell.

Procedure

  1. Download the workflow CommServe Database Long-Term Archiving from the Commvault Store.

For instructions, see Downloading and Updating Workflows from the Commvault Store.

  2. To deploy the workflow, in the Commcell Browser, right-click CommServe Database Long-Term Archiving, and then click All Tasks > Deploy.

  3. To run the workflow, right-click CommServe Database Long-Term Archiving again, and then click All Tasks > Execute.

The CommServe Database Long-Term Archiving Options dialog box appears.

  4. In Run workflow on, select the workflow engine to execute the workflow.

To use the workflow engine that has the most recent deployed version of the workflow, select Any.

  5. From the Destination CommCell list, select the destination CommCell environment to which you want to export the metadata.

  6. In the Archive jobs older than months box, type the number of months that the jobs must be older than to consider the jobs for archival.

  7. Click OK.

The Select Clients to Archive dialog box appears.

  8. From the Clients list, select the clients for which you want to archive jobs, and then click OK.

  9. Click OK.

What to Do Next

You must enable the destination Commcell to access the backup data on the tape media in the source CommCell.

  • Use the vault tracker feature to export the tape media that contain the backup data to the destination CommCell.

For instructions, see Vault Tracker Feature.

  • Share the tape library that contains the tapes with backup data with the destination CommCell.

For instructions, see Library and Drive Sharing Across CommCells.
