Backup of VMs with Duplicate UUIDs Creates a Single VM Client

If you import a virtual machine from one vCenter to another, the same UUID is used for both VMs. When you perform backups, a single VM client is created in the CommCell Console for both VMs.

Symptom

If the same UUID is used for more than one VM, backups create a single VM client in the CommCell Console with a separate backup set for each duplicate VM.

Cause

This issue can occur when a virtual machine is imported from one vCenter to another. By default, the imported VM has the same UUID as the source VM.

For example, this can occur if you clone a VM and migrate the clone to a different vCenter. In this scenario, the uuid.bios and vc.uuid values would be identical for the original and cloned VMs.

Resolution

To resolve this issue:

  1. Regenerate the UUID for the imported VM as described in the VMware article Override the Generated UUID for a Virtual Machine.

  2. Perform a new backup of the imported VM.

The new backup creates a separate VM client for the imported VM.
