Backups for Oracle Cloud Classic

Commvault backs up all powered on instances that are identified on the Content tab for a subclient.

You can perform full, incremental, or synthetic full backups. The first backup of an instance is always a full backup, regardless of the selected backup type.

Backups of instances are performed in round-robin sequence.

When an instance is discovered during backup, a client for the instance is created in the CommCell Console if one does not already exist. If an instance with spaces in its name is discovered during backup, the spaces are replaced with underscores ('_') when creating the client name that is displayed in the CommCell Console. The instance name with spaces is still displayed on the Instance Status tab for the backup job, in the backup job summary, and in reports that include the name.

Considerations

Oracle Cloud Classic storage volumes can be up to 2 TB, and a maximum of 10 storage volumes can be attached to each instance. For backups and restores, volumes for an instance are attached to the VSA proxy, and the limit on the number of volumes applies to the total number of volumes for the proxy and the instance being backed up or restored. If the proxy for a backup job has to attach more than 10 volumes, the job goes pending and restarts automatically until all volumes have been backed up.

Backup Process

Backups include the following stages:

1. Take a snapshot of each instance.

2. Create volumes from the snapshots.

3. Attach volumes to the VSA proxy.

4. Back up the volumes.

   Incremental backups use CRC to track incremental changes. Backup data goes through the MediaAgent for the storage policy associated with the backup.

5. Unmount, detach, and delete the volumes and snapshots that were created for the backup.

Backup Types

You can perform the following types of backups, either immediately or on a schedule.

• Full backups: Back up the entire instance. This is the most comprehensive backup.

• Incremental backups: Back up instance data that has changed since the most recent backup.

• Synthetic Full backups: Consolidate instance data from the most recent full backup with subsequent incremental backups.
