Changing the Name and Host Name of a Client Computer

You can change the name and host name of a client computer.

Before You Begin

  • Review the schedules associated with the client. Client schedules must be recreated after changing the name of a client computer. For information on viewing schedules, see Viewing Job Schedules.

  • Verify that there are no jobs running for the client.

  • If you are changing the name or host name of a proxy client or a client behind a proxy, review the information in Network Considerations for Name Change Operations.

  • Verify that the client is online. If you submit the name change request when the client is offline, the name change operation is completed when the client comes online.

Procedure

  1. Perform the name change on the computer operating system and then verify the following:

    • Verify that the computer is available in the network with the new name. (DNS lookup or other name resolution facilities are appropriately configured to resolve the new name of the computer.)

    • Verify that all applications running on the computer, for example, SQL server, Exchange, Server, and Oracle database, function with the new name. To rename a computer that hosts a stand-alone instance of SQL Server, see http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143799.aspx.

    • Use ping (or other network connectivity utilities) to verify that the computer with the new name is accessible. Also verify that other computers in the network are accessible to the computer with the new name.

  2. If you are changing the name of a Windows cluster, open the Microsoft Failover Cluster Manager software and take the GxClusPlugin resource offline. After the resource is offline, proceed to the next step.

  3. From the CommCell Browser, right-click the client or MediaAgent whose name was changed, and then click Properties.

  4. Update the name:

    On a Client Computer

    1. In the Client Name section of the General tab, click Edit.

    2. In the Edit Client Name Dialog window, update name, host name, or both with a new name.

      Note

      • When you specify a new name for a client computer, do not include spaces in the name.

      • CommServe HostName displays the full interface name of the CommServe computer used by the Client to communicate with the CommServe.

    3. Click OK to save the changes.

    On a MediaAgent Computer

    1. In the Names section of the General tab, click Edit.

    2. In the Edit MediaAgent Name window, update MediaAgent Name with the new name.

      Note

      • When you specify a new name for a client computer, do not include spaces in the name.

      • MediaAgent CommServe Host Name displays the full interface name of the CommServe computer used by the MediaAgent to communicate with the CommServe.

    3. Click OK to save the changes.

  5. If you changed the name of a Windows cluster, push the name change to remote clients:

    1. In the Client Computer Properties dialog box, click Advanced.

    2. In the Advanced Client Properties dialog box, on the Cluster Group Configuration tab, select the Force Sync configuration on remote nodes check box.

Note: After the Force Sync configuration on remote nodes operation is completed, the GxClusPlugin resource will automatically come back online.

    3. Click OK to close the Advanced Client Properties dialog box.

  6. Click OK to close the properties dialog box.

The services on the client are automatically restarted. For clients that contain the File Archiver for Windows/Unix agent or the One Pass agent, it is important that services are restarted after the name change. This ensures that stub recalls from these clients function correctly.
