Deployment of the Virtual Server Agent for Microsoft Azure Stack

Commvault uses the following components to support data protection and recovery operations:

  • CommServe host: Provides management, status, and reporting for protection operations. The CommServe user interface includes the CommCell Console and CommCell Browser.

  • Virtual Server Agent (VSA): The Virtual Server Agent can be installed on one or more machines, so that those machines can serve as VSA proxies. A VSA proxy manages backup and restore operations for guest VMs in your environment, eliminating the need to install agents on guest VMs.

The VSA can be installed on physical machines or Azure Stack virtual machines. For best results, deploy the VSA proxy on a virtual machine in the Azure Stack cloud.

Deploying the VSA proxy on an Azure Stack VM that is optimized for I/O intensive workloads will support faster backups. See Sizes for virtual machines in Azure Stack for more information.

  • MediaAgents: MediaAgents can reside in Azure Stack virtual machines or on servers in the physical environment. For best results, deploy the MediaAgent on a virtual machine in the Azure Stack cloud. MediaAgents on the VSA proxy instance might provide better performance.

You can deploy Commvault components on a single server or on different physical or virtual machines.
