Erasing All Spare Media Marked as Erasable

When you have to erase all the spare media on a tape library that is marked as erasable, run the Erase Spare Media operation.

Before you begin

Ensure that all the spare media in the library is marked as erasable, as described in Marking Media as Erasable.

Procedure
  1. From the CommCell Browser, expand to Storage Resources | Libraries.

  2. Right-click the appropriate library and click Erase Spare Media.

The Erase Spare Media dialog box displays the list of the spare media that are marked as erasable.

  3. Choose how you want to erase the media:

    • To mark the contents of the media as unrecoverable, click Quick Erase.

After the media is erased, the OML (On-Media-Label) is overwritten by a new OML when the media are recycled.

    • To physically erase the entire media, click Full Erase.

Full Erase is a time-intensive process, and may take longer than Quick Erase to erase the spare media depending on the size of the tape.

  4. Optional: To schedule the Erase Media operation:

    1. On the Job Initiation tab, select Schedule, and click Configure.

    2. On the Schedule Details dialog box, define the schedule for the erase operation and click OK.

  5. Click OK.

  6. Click Yes to run the erase media operation.
