Getting Started with Subclient Policy

Subclient Policies provide a way for you to configure similar file system clients from a central template. For example, you can assign the same storage policy to several Windows clients all at once using a subclient policy. This alleviates the need to manually set up similar file system clients for data management tasks.

Subclient Policies are especially useful in large enterprise environments, where individually configuring similar clients is both time-consuming and impractical.

Use the steps provided in the following sections to create a new subclient policy for Windows and Unix File System clients.

Windows File System Clients

  1. From the CommCell Browser, navigate to Policies > Subclient Policies.

  2. Right-click Subclient Policies, and click New Subclient Policy.

  3. From the Create New Subclient Policy dialog box, enter a name for the subclient policy in the Name box.

  4. From the iDataAgent list, select Windows File System.

  5. In the Storage Policy column, select a storage policy for the default subclient.

  6. Click the Association tab to view the Windows file system clients.

  7. Select the backup set on the client that you want to associate with this subclient policy, and then click OK.

  8. To control access to the subclient policy, click the Security tab, and then click Add.

  9. Select the users, user groups, and roles to associate with the subclient policy.

For details on associating users, user groups, and roles to a subclient policy, see Administering the Security Associations of an Entity.

Note: The creator of the subclient policy is automatically assigned the Subclient Policy Owner role. The Subclient Policy Owner role is a system-generated role and contains the Edit Subclient Policy, Edit Subclient Policy Associations, Delete Subclient Policy, View, and Change Security Settings permissions.

  10. In the CommCell Browser pane under the Policies > Subclient Policies node, you can see your subclient policy.
