Master Drive Pools, Drive Pools and Drives - Overview

Master Drive Pools

A Master Drive Pool consists of drive pools within a single library. A Master Drive Pool is a logical entity that is used to facilitate the sharing of a library’s drives between multiple MediaAgents.

You can modify the following Master Drive Pool properties:

  • Master Drive Pool Name

This can be used to uniquely identify a master drive pool.

  • Enable/Disable Master Drive Pool

  • Use this option to activate or deactivate the master drive pool.

  • Drive Allocation Policy

  • Use these options to distribute the drives among multiple drive pools sharing the library.

Drive Pools

A Drive Pool is a set of drives which are attached or accessible to a MediaAgent. Like the Master Drive Pools, drive pools are also logical entities used to facilitate the sharing of a library’s drives between multiple MediaAgents.

You can modify the following Drive Pool properties:

  • Drive Pool Name

This can be used to uniquely identify a drive pool.

  • Enable/Disable Drive Pool

Use this option to activate or deactivate the drive pool.

  • Allocate drives

Use these options to assign all or some of the drives in the library to the drive pool.

Best Practice for Configuring Drive Pools

When configuring drive pools for mixed drive types, or in a cases where drives are configured at a per MediaAgent basis, it is recommended to create separate drive pools for each drive type or each MediaAgent.

Important Considerations

NDMP Load-Balancing

The Drive Pools, Storage Policies, and Subclients for the NDMP agent can be configured so that backup, restore, and auxiliary copy jobs are spread among different MediaAgents. The processor load for these jobs will occur on different machines. For more information, see NDMP Agent Configuration.
