Migrating Existing Data Using Google Transfer Appliance

Data can be migrated to Google Cloud storage using the Google Transfer Appliance, when must migrate large amounts of data from an existing disk library, or a local cloud storage library and /or may not have sufficient network bandwidth to directly transfer the data to the cloud storage.

Before You Begin

Procedure

  1. Disable all write operations on the library. (This will ensure that no additional data is written in the library during the migration process.)

For more information about disabling write operations, see Marking a Library Offline for Maintenance.

  2. Disable data aging on the library. (This will ensure that no data is aged off from the library during the migration process.)

For more information about disabling data aging, see Enable or Disable Pruning of Aged Data.

  3. Transfer the data to the appliance using the methods described in https://cloud.google.com/transfer-appliance/docs/4.0/transfer-data.

    Important

Copy only the Base Folder to the appliance during the data transfer. For example:

    • For disk library, copy Folder_XX.XX.XXXX_XX.XX, which would be available under the drive or folder in which the library is configured. For example: G:\Folder_03.01.2016 or G:\Disk_Library\Folder_03.01.2016

    • For local cloud library, capture the XXXXXX_XX.XX.XXXX_XX.XX, which would be available under the container name. For example A:\My_Container_Name\L8PN5Z_08.30.2018_16.57

  4. Once the jobs associated with the initial seeding is complete, shutdown the appliance using the recommended shut down process for Google Appliance.

  5. Ship the Appliance to Google so that the data can be uploaded to the Google Cloud Storage Account.

  6. Once the data is uploaded and available in the cloud, convert the existing library (disk library, or a local cloud storage library) to a Google Cloud storage library.

  7. Enable all write operations on the library.

For more information about enabling write operations, see Marking a Library Offline for Maintenance.

  8. Enable data aging on the library.

For more information about enabling data aging, see Enable or Disable Pruning of Aged Data.

  9. Run one or more restore jobs to test your setup.

For more information about performing a restore, see Restore Backup Data.
