Oracle Instant Clones

Both Active Database Management copy solutions use the IntelliSnap interface and the block-level backup interface for the database backups, and traditional backups for the log files.

The Active Database Management copy solutions require IntelliSnap, so make sure that you configure the following items:

  • An IntelliSnap array

  • IntelliSnap on the Oracle client

  • IntelliSnap on the Oracle subclient

If you use an Oracle ASM diskgroup for the backup storage location, then the MediaAgent must have a UNIX operating system.

IntelliSnap with Block-Level Backup

You can use this feature in the following cases:

  • When the primary database storage resides on volumes that can be snapped.

  • When you want to use less expensive backup copies.

For this option, configure an Oracle database subclient to use IntelliSnap with a block-level volume copy option.

When you perform a backup operation on the subclient, the software takes a snapshot of the volume, and then creates a snapshot copy of the backup.

After you have the snapshot copy, run a backup copy operation to move the data to long-term media.

IntelliSnap with Image Copy

You can use this feature in the following cases:

  • When the primary database storage resides on volumes that cannot be snapped.

  • When you want to use less expensive storage for the copy.

The Oracle Image Copy feature:

  • Protects any database independent of the primary storage type, or server type (physical or virtual machine)

  • Creates backups in the native format, which means that you can rapidly recover the data

  • Does not force users to place the database in hot backup mode

When you use this feature, the Commvault software uses RMAN to back up the incremental database changes to an image copy volume that can be snapped, and then takes a snap of the volume.

During the backup copy operation, the Commvault software uses the block-level interface.

IntelliSnap Clone

You can duplicate the source database by cloning the snapshots that were created during the backup when you use any of the following arrays:

  • NetApp

  • Pure Storage

  • EMC Timefinder Clone

The cloning feature uses the storage array hardware capability.
