Postupgrade Verification Tests for Backup and Restore Operations

After the upgrade, you must immediately verify that backup and restore operations run as expected.

The following table provides a series of recommended test scenarios that you can perform on your CommCell environment.

Application Granular Restores

For SharePoint, Exchange, or Notes clients:

  • Browse and select random documents or messages to restore.

  • Perform an out-of-place restore.

  • Create a restore subfolder as the target.

  • Verify document permissions.

Granular File-Level Restores for Virtual Machine

If you have file-level or disk-level backups enabled, verify granular restores by using one or more of the following tests:

  • Perform a browse and restore operation, and select Guest Files and Folders.

  • Perform an out-of-place restore.

  • Create a restore subfolder on the client as the target.

  • Verify that ACLs and user permissions are restored correctly.

Restore operations for File System Agent on a Client

  • Browse and select random files to restore from a client.

  • Perform an out-of-place restore.

  • Create a restore subfolder on the client as target.

  • Verify that ACLs are restored correctly.

Restore operations for File System Agent on a Cluster Environment

  • Browse and select random files to restore from a physical node on a cluster group client.

  • Perform an out-of-place restore.

  • Create a restore subfolder on the physical node as the target.

  • Verify that ACLs are restored correctly.

Restore operations across the Network for File System Agent

  • Browse and select random files to restore from a client.

  • Perform an out-of-place restore.

  • Restore to an alternate client by using a CIFS path.

  • Create a restore subfolder on the client as the target.

  • Verify that ACLs are restored correctly.

Restore operations for File System Agent on a Deconfigured Client

  • Browse and select random files to restore from a deconfigured client.

  • Perform an out-of-place restore.

  • Restore to an alternate client by using a CIFS path.

  • Create a restore subfolder on the client as the target.

  • Verify that ACLs are restored correctly.

Virtual Machine Restores (Test 1)

  • Restore the virtual machine with new name.

  • Make sure that the restore virtual machine is powered on.

  • Log on to the virtual machine to verify the restore.

Virtual Machine Restores (Test 2)

  • Restore the virtual machine with a new name.

  • Do not power on the virtual machine.

  • Remove the NIC and log on to the virtual machine to verify the restore.
