Protecting the Oracle Flash Recovery Area

Applies to: Oracle and Oracle RAC

The Oracle Flash Recovery Area (FRA) is a specific area in the disk storage that exclusively holds a copy of all backup-related components, including image copies, redo logs, and control file autobackups.

This feature, configured for a subclient, facilitates faster restores of backup data and minimizes restores from tapes during restore operations.

When you configure the subclient to include the FRA, the software also backs up the archive log files from the FRA. Consider having a separate archive log subclient in the following cases:

  • You need to back up the archive log files more often than the FRA

  • You want to take advantage of the Commvault advanced archive log backup features. For example, to prevent redundant log backups and to make sure that the logs are not deleted until they have been backed up, select the option to back up logs that have not been backed up N times and to delete logs that have been backed up N times. For more information, see Performing an Oracle Log Backup.

Procedure

  1. From the CommCell Browser, expand Client Computers > client > Oracle > instance.

  2. Right-click the subclient and then click Properties.

  3. On the Content tab of the Subclient Properties dialog box, select the Protect backup recover area check box.

  4. Click OK to close the Subclient Properties dialog box.
