You can restore virtual machines (VMs) or guest files or folders to the source VM or to a new destination. Restores are supported for both Windows and Linux virtual machines.
If you restore a VM to a different Xen pool, you must provide user credentials for the root user or a user account with the Pool Administrator (Pool Admin) role.
Note
With XenServer 6.x, a VSA proxy for Xen can have a maximum of 16 disks attached, including any disks that belong to the proxy as well as VM disks that are included with a backup or restore operation. If the disk limit is exceeded during a backup operation, the operation fails.
Restore Types
When you set up a restore operation for Xen data, you can select one of the following restore types:

Full Virtual Machine
This restore type is selected by default. Use this restore type in the following scenarios:

When the original virtual machine is unusable

To restore an entire virtual machine to a specific point in time

To restore a virtual machine to a different XenServer

Guest Files or Folders
Use this restore type to restore files or folders from a virtual machine. Use this restore type in the following scenarios:

You cannot open the original file or folder.

To restore a file or a folder from a specific point in time.
Files and folders can be restored to the source VM, to a physical client, or to a VM with an appropriate agent installed.
The following file systems are supported:
