Restoring a SAP HANA Backup to a New Host or a New Instance (Database Copy)

You can perform a database copy to:

  • Build a demonstration database from a production system

  • Build a test database that tests the production database without affecting the production database

  • Schedule a disaster recovery test

The destination SID can be different from the backup SID.

If you want to recover only the data, then you must perform the restore by using a full backup.

Note

The SAP HANA software resets the backup catalog on the target database after you perform a database copy. You can only restore backup jobs that you take after you perform the database copy.

The SAP HANA software automatically places the destination database in the right state to perform a restore.

If you perform cross-machine restores, run SAP HANA SPS09 Rev 94 or later.

If you have a SAP HANA 2.0 configuration, then the source SID and the target SID must match for the SYSTEMDB.

Before You Begin

  1. Verify that you have the correct version and service pack of the Commvault software and SAP HANA.

For information on the system requirements, see System Requirements - SAP HANA iDataAgent.

  2. If the restore is a multinode to multinode restore, perform the following tasks:

    1. Verify that the source node topology and the destination node topology are the same.

    2. Create the param file on all nodes. For more information, see Creating the SAP HANA Parameter File.

    3. Set the srcCrossClient and srcCrossDbName parameters in the param file on all nodes. For more information, see SAP HANA BACKINT Configuration Parameters.

Procedure

  1. From the CommCell Browser, expand Client Computers > pseudo-client > SAP HANA.

  2. Right-click the instance, point to All Tasks and then click Browse and Restore.

  3. On the Browse and Restore dialog box, select Latest Backup and click View Content.

  4. From the Browse window, under SAP HANA, select the data to restore, and then click Recover All Selected.

The Restore Options dialog box appears.

  5. On the General tab, select the copy options:

    1. From the Destination Client list, select the client that you want to copy the database to.

The Commvault software populates the Destination Instance.

    2. Select the type of copy that you want to perform:

Recover the database to the most recent state
      1. Select Recover Database To.

      2. Select Most Recent State.

      Recover to a point-in-time
      1. Select Recover Database To.

      2. Select Point In Time.

      3. Select the date and time.

Note: If the time zone is different on the CommServe computer and client, in the Time Zone box, select the client computer time zone.

      Recover only the data

To use this option, you must perform the restore by using a full backup.

If you restore by specifying the internal backup job ID, then you must have the catalog backup available with backint. SAP HANA creates the internal backup ID and the Commvault software displays the value on the Job Details dialog box.

If you restore by specifying the backup prefix, then you do not have to have the catalog backup available with backint. The Commvault software creates the backup prefix by pre-pending the job ID to the backup prefix. For example, JOB_ID_SNAP.

      1. Select Recover data only.

      2. Select the backup to use for the restore:

        • To restore by specifying the backup prefix, in the Backup prefix box, type the backup prefix for the backup that you want to restore.

You can view the backup prefix on the Job Details dialog box (General tab, Backup Prefix). For more information, see Viewing Details of a Job.

        • To restore by specifying the internal backup job ID, in the Internal Backup ID box, type the internal backup job ID that you want to restore.

You can view the SAP HANA internal backup job ID on the Job Details dialog box (General tab, Internal Backup ID). For more information, see Viewing Details of a Job.

    3. To verify that all the backups required for the recovery operation are available, select the Check Access check box.

    4. Select the Initialize log area check box.

For information on the initialize log area option, see SAP HANA Restore Options.

    5. Optional: Select the Use Delta Backups check box.

For information on the delta backup option, see SAP HANA Restore Options.

  6. Click OK to close the Restore Options dialog box and start the restore.
