Setting Up the Storage Policy Copy to be the Primary Copy

You can convert a storage policy copy to a primary copy. However, you must consider the following conditions:

  • Synchronize the secondary copy with the primary copy before it is promoted. If the secondary copy is not synchronized, there could be a potential data loss.

  • Verify if the secondary copy has a spool copy as its source. If it is, then make sure that this spool copy is also associated as a source to another (or additional) synchronous copy with all the same client associations.

This verification is necessary before promoting a copy because if no additional synchronous copies are assigned to a spool copy, then the pruning for that spool copy will not happen and this results in disks running out of storage space.

  • Do not promote a secondary copy to be the primary copy if backups, restores, or auxiliary copy jobs are running.

  • The retention period of a copy is retained when it is promoted as a primary copy. Therefore, you must change the retention period of other storage policy copy (or copies) so that it has its retention period greater than or equal to the retention period of the current primary copy.
