Smart Device Access to Backed Up Files

The Commvault Edge app provides quick access to backed up data using a smart device. The backed up files available to the end user in the app are from the default subclient of their client in the CommCell.

Operations End-Users Can Perform

This section describes the operations that end-users can perform on their smart devices.

Browse Your Backup Files

You can access the data you backed up with Commvault from most smart devices. This application allows you to navigate through your clients in the CommCell and find your backup files using the search capability or by browsing the file system.

Download Your Backup Files

You can download your backup data directly from the client where it resides to your smart device. Once downloaded, the files can be opened from your device using applications that support the file type.

Share Your Backup Files

You can email your backup data to the people you want to share your files with.

View the Location of Your Clients

You can view the geographical location of your client where it was last seen, based on its IP address. This is useful to track the location of laptop clients.

View the Backup Status of Your Clients

You can view the backup summary details for each of your clients, such as when the last backup was performed and when the next backup will be.

Upload Data from Your Device

You can upload files residing in your device, such as images and videos, to the clients available in the application.

Run On-Demand Backups (Only on Windows 8 Devices)

You can initiate a backup directly from your Windows 8 device. This is useful if backups are not scheduled to run on a client.

Who Can Use This App

Commvault Edge can be used by any CommCell user who wants to browse or download their backup data. As an added security measure, you will be able to view only your data. Data from other users will not be visible to you unless you have administrative privileges.

Application Requirements

This application requires the following configurations:

  • the Web Server and Web Console software to be installed on a computer that can connect to the CommServe

  • the end-user to be configured as client owner of the client computer that will be accessed through the application

For information on the installation steps and the end-user configuration, see Getting Started for Commvault Edge Endpoint Solutions.

Supported Devices

The following smart devices are supported:

  • Apple devices - iPhone, iPod, iPad - running iOS 8.0 or later

  • Android devices running version 4.0 or later

  • Windows 8 and Windows RT devices (Surface and PC only)

Secure Login Connections

If you have enabled a secure connection on the Web Server and if a proxy computer is used to communicate with the server, users must select Secure Connection when logging in using the Commvault Edge app.

A valid SSL certificate signed by a trusted certificate authority is required, for example, VeriSign. If your certificate is self-signed, log on will fail.
