Associating CommCell Entities With a Storage Policy Copy

Applies to: Synchronous copy, selective copy, parallel copy, deferred copy, spool copy, backup copy, WORM copy

You can associate CommCell entities with a storage policy copy at different granular levels. After the association, only new backup jobs of the chosen CommCell entities are copied to the storage policy copy during an auxiliary copy operation. By default, all the clients associated with a storage policy are associated with the storage policy copy. If a parent entity is selected, then by default all the children entities are selected and if any child entity is added later in the backup cycles, then that child entity is also automatically added to this association. However, you can also choose to exclude any entity from this association.

When you associate a new subclient to a secondary copy, the auxiliary copy operation automatically picks up the jobs that are run after the association.

However, if the job is an incremental backup job, the software picks up any previous incremental backup jobs and full backup job from the current cycle. For a CommServe upgraded from a Service Pack earlier to SP20, you must perform a qoperation to enable picking the jobs from the current cycle for an incremental backup job. For instructions, see Configuring the Picking of Jobs from the Current Cycle for a Subclient.

Procedure

  1. From the CommCell Browser, go to Policies > Storage Policies > storage_policy.

  2. Right-click the storage policy copy, and then click Properties.

The Storage Policy Copy Properties dialog box appears.

  3. On the Associations tab, click the Edit tab.

All the client computers and client computer groups that are associated with the storage policy are listed.

  4. Select the entities that you want to associate with the storage policy copy.

  5. To deassociate an entity, you can do any of the following:

    • Unselect entity by clearing the checkbox: When any new entities are associated with the policy, they are not selected on the storage policy copy.

    • Exclude entity by selecting red cross: When any new entities are associated with the policy, they are automatically selected on the storage policy copy.

  6. On the View tab, verify that only the entities you selected are displayed.

All the client computers that are associated with the storage policy copy are listed.

  7. To view the CommCell entities that are excluded from the storage policy copy association, select the Show only excluded entities checkbox.

  8. Click OK.

Points to Remember

When associating entities with a storage policy copy, remember to keep the following points in mind:

  • If a parent VSA client is associated, then all the children VMs are automatically associated to the storage policy copy.

  • If a parent VSA client is associated and some children VMs are excluded, then only these children VMs are excluded from the association with the storage policy copy. All the other VMs that are linked with the parent VSA client remain associated with the storage policy copy.

  • If a parent VSA client is excluded and a child VM is associated, then the exclusion is honored and the child VM is not accounted as associated with the storage policy copy.

  • For VSA clients, if you have rights on VMs in a client computer group, then clients and client computer groups that are associated with the storage policy copy are displayed.

  • If you exclude an entity that belongs to multiple client computer groups, then the entity is excluded from the storage policy copy association for all the client computer groups that it belongs to.

  • If you have user rights on all client computer groups, then you can view and edit the associations of all the client computer groups including the root client computer group node.

  • If a VM with active backup jobs that is on an excluded subclient is moved to a new included subclient, then the software does not pick any new backup jobs of the VM for copy till the previous subclient is excluded.

  • If you have user rights on limited number of client computer groups, then you can view and edit associations of only those selected client computer groups. With limited rights, you cannot edit the root client computer group node.
