Backups

Commvault backs up all of the containers and images identified on the Content tab for a subclient.

  • For images, the backup process identifies whether an image has already been backed up, and performs a new backup only if one is needed. The backup creates a tar archive for the image and saves it to the MediaAgent.

  • For containers, the backup includes the container configuration file, modified layer file, any associated files, and the base image if it has not already been backed up. If the base image used by a container is already backed up, the image is associated to the container as a reference.

Backups of containers and images are performed in round-robin sequence.

When a container or image is discovered during backup, a client for the container or image is created in the CommCell Console if one does not already exist.

You can perform full, incremental, or synthetic full backups. The first backup of a container or image is always a full backup, regardless of the selected backup type.

Note

You can perform ongoing incremental backups of containers only. When you back up images, they are full backups.
