Configuring Backups for Virtual Machines Hosted on SMB Shares (Microsoft Hyper-V)

On Windows Server 2012 and later versions, you can back up and restore virtual machines (VM) hosted on SMB (Server Message Block Protocol) shares.

Note: Backups are supported for SMB shares residing on storage arrays that support 3.0 protocol.

Before You Begin

Make sure that the following requirements are met before backing up any virtual machine from the shares:

Note: If there are multiple nodes make sure that the following requirements are met on every node of the Hyper-V cluster.

  • The Virtual Server Agent (VSA) must be installed on all nodes that host VMs on SMB shares in the Hyper-V cluster.

  • To back up VMs using a remote proxy, you must complete the following additional tasks:

    • Add the node that is used as a remote proxy to the virtual server instance. For instructions, see Adding or Removing Nodes. You are not required to add the remaining nodes as proxies to the virtual server instance.

    • Enable the Common Internet File System (CIFS) delegation for the user account on the file server, proxy node, and the node that host the SMB-based virtual machine. Refer to the Microsoft documentation for instructions on how to enable constrained delegation.

    • If the disks are added to the VMs using IP address of the file server, configure reverse DNS lookup for the file server on the Active Directory domain. For more information on configuring reverse lookup, see Reverse Lookup.

  • For SMB shares on Windows file server, note the following requirements:

    • The Application server and file server must be running on Windows 2012 and later.

    • The File Server VSS Agent Service role must be enabled on the file servers.

      Refer to the Microsoft documentation for instructions on how to enable the server roles.

  • Application servers and file servers must be connected to an Active Directory domain residing in the same Active Directory forest.

  • The user account for the application virtualization client must be part of the following administrator groups on the Hyper-V host:

    • Local Administrators group (Hyper-V Server 2008 R2)

    • Hyper-V Administrators group (Hyper-V Server 2012 and later)

    For a Hyper-V cluster, the user account must have full Cluster Permissions (Read and Full Control).

  • The Hyper-V server computer account and the virtualization user name must be allowed full permissions to the SMB share folder.

    Refer to the Microsoft documentation for instructions on how to share windows folders.

Procedure

  1. From the CommCell Browser, expand Client Computers > Client > Virtual Server > Hyper-V > backup_set.

  2. Right-click the subclient and select Properties.

  3. On the Content tab, click Browse and select the SMB storage from the available list.

    Expand any Hyper-V Server node to view all the local volumes on the server or expand the Cluster Shared Volume node. Select any file server, volume or cluster shared volume and all its child objects are automatically added to the subclient content.

  4. Click OK.
