Creating a Placeholder Client

When you create a server to client one-way network topology before you have clients, you must create a placeholder client and push the network configuration before you install the Commvault software on the placeholder client.

Before You Begin

Procedure

  1. Create a placeholder for the client that will receive connections from the CommServe computer:

    1. From the CommCell Browser, expand Client Computers, and then click New Client > File System > [Windows or Unix].

    2. In the New Windows Client window, enter a Client Name and Host Name of the server/client that you are going to install. These details will also be used during your server/client installation.

    3. Click Next.

    4. Confirm the information shown under Summary, and then click Finish.

  2. Add the placeholder client to the DMZ client group that you specified in the network topology by performing the following:

    1. From the CommCell Browser, expand Client Computer Groups, right-click the DMZ_client_group, and then click Properties.

    2. In the properties dialog box, select the placeholder client from the All clients list, click Include >, and then click OK.

  3. Push the network configuration on the trusted client group, the placeholder client, the CommServe computer, and the MediaAgent computer. For example:

    1. From the CommCell Browser, expand Client Computer Groups, right-click the DMZ_client_group, and then click All Tasks > Push Network Configuration.

    2. When the Warning dialog box appears, click Continue.

A notification appears indicating that the push network operation was successful.

What to Do Next

  1. Install the Commvault software on the placeholder client.

For network instructions during the installation, see Setting Up Direct Connections from the CommServe Computer to the Client.

  2. From the CommCell Browser, right-click the network topology that you configured, click Push Network Configurations, and then click OK.
