Creating a User-Defined Subclient for the Windows File System Agent

Subclients contain information about what data is backed up. You can create a user-defined subclient to manage and back up specific data files.

About This Task

A user-defined subclient can back up the following types of data:

• Specific files and folders

• UNC paths

  For more information, see Adding UNC Paths as Content for Windows File System.

• The Content Library folder, which collects frequently accessed data such as the following:

  • Audio files

  • Executable files

  • Image files

  • Microsoft Office files

  • System files

  • Video files

Before You Begin

Consider the following guidelines before you add subclient content for backups:

• If you change the subclient content from "\" to a specific directory, then the next backup job is a Full backup, regardless of the backup type that you selected.

• If you define overlapping content in multiple subclients within the same backup set, then only one subclient backs up that content. Other subclients do not back up the content.

  The subclient that contains the parent folder backs up all the files and folders under the parent folder. However, if any of the child folders are specified as content in another subclient, then the child folder is automatically filtered when the backup runs.

  Example

  Subclient 1 has C:\Parent as subclient content and Subclient 2 has C:\Parent\Child as subclient content. When you back up Subclient 1, all files and folders within C:\Parent are backed up, except the Child folder. The Child folder is filtered from the backup. When you back up Subclient 2, all files and folders within the Child folder are backed up.

• The default subclient does not back up the content that is specified in the other subclients within the same backup set.

• You can use wildcards to define the subclient content. When you define wildcards for the subclient, the overlapping content is either filtered or backed up twice.

  Example 1

  Subclient 1 has C:\Parent as subclient content, and Subclient 2 has C:\Parent\Child\*.txt as subclient content. When you back up Subclient 1, all files and folders within C:\Parent are backed up, except files that have a .txt extension in C:\Parent\Child. When you back up Subclient 2, all files that have a .txt extension are backed up.

  Example 2

  Subclient 1 has C:\PARENT\** as subclient content and Subclient 2 has C:\Parent \Child** as subclient content. When you back up subclient 1, content under C:\Parent \Child is also backed up.

  Example 3

  Subclient 1 has C:\PARENT as subclient content and Subclient 2 has C:\Parent \Child\** as subclient content. When you back up subclient 1, content under C:\Parent \Child is excluded from backup.

Procedure

1. From the CommCell Browser, expand Client Computers > client > File System.

2. Right-click the appropriate backup set, point to All Tasks, and then click New Subclient.

   The Subclient Properties dialog box appears.

3. Specify the basic settings for the subclient:

   • In the Subclient Name box, type a name.

   • On the Content tab, click Browse toselect the directory or file that you want to back up, and then click Add.

     Repeat this step to include all the files and directories that you want to backup.

4. On the Storage Device tab, in the Storage Policy list, click a storage policy to associate with the subclient.

   Tip:

   • To create a new storage policy, click Create Storage Policy, and then follow the instructions in the storage policy creation wizard.

   • You can also create an incremental storage policy for incremental and differential backups. For more information, see Enabling an Incremental Storage Policy.

5. Click OK.
