Defining Filters for Content

Filters can be configured to exclude virtual machines or disks from backups. You can define filters on a subclient (only applies to that subclient) or on a backup set (applies to all subclients under the backup set).

For each subclient under a backup set, the filtering specified for the backup set is combined with the filtering for the subclient to determine which content is excluded from backups. Any filtering defined in a backup set is also visible in the subclients under the backup set when the Show Backupset Filters option is selected, and is applied at the subclient level even if backup set filters are not displayed.

Note

If a virtual machine is added by browsing and selecting the VM name, discovery is performed based on the GUID for the VM. If that VM is later restored in place from a backup, a new GUID is generated, and that VM is no longer filtered from the backup. To filter that VM, you must remove the old filter rule, then add a new rule or use a name pattern for the filter.

Procedure

  1. From the CommCell Browser, expand Client Computers > virtualization_client > Virtual Server > FusionCompute > backup_set.

  2. Right-click the backup set or subclient and then click Properties.

  3. Select one of the following:

    • In the Backup Set Property dialog box, click the VM Filters tab.

    • In the Subclient Properties dialog box, click the Filters tab.

    To define a new filter for VMs, you can browse or define a rule.

  4. Browse to select an object:

    1. Click Browse.

    2. Select a view from the list at the top left of the Browse dialog box:

      • VMs and Templates: Select templates or virtual machines.

      • Compute Pool: Select a server, site, cluster, or VM.

      • Storage Pool: Select a storage pool or VM.

    3. Click OK.

  5. To define a rule for VMs:

    1. On the VM Filters tab of a backup set, or in the VM Filters section in the Filters tab for a subclient, click Add.

    2. In the Rule Group box, select the rule type from the drop-down list and enter the appropriate information in the box on the right:

      Rule Type

      Matching Entry

      VM Name/Pattern

      Enter a pattern (for example, Test* to identify virtual machines for which the virtual machine name begins with "Test").

      Template

      Select True or False to select or ignore templates.

      Host

      Browse to select a server or enter a name pattern.

      Datastore

      Browse to select a datastore or enter a name pattern.

      Guest OS

      Enter the exact name of the operating system or a pattern to identify an operating system group (for example, Microsoft* to identify any virtual machine that has a version of the Windows operating system).

      Power State

      Select one of the following options to identify VMs:

      • Powered On - VMs that are powered on.

      • Powered Off - VMs that are powered off.

      • Other - VMs with a different power on status, such as Pause or Saved.

    3. To define multiple rules in a rule group, click + and define another rule. The following options are available for a rule group with multiple rules:

      • If you define multiple rules in a rule group, you can indicate whether VMs are selected when they match all of the rules (selected by default), or when they match any of the rules.

      • To exclude VMs based on any of the criteria, you can use the Does Not Equal operator for one or more of the rules in a rule group. (For rule groups with a single rule, the only operator you can use is Equals.)

      For simple rules defined in the Contents of subclient list (not in a rule group), VMs are selected if they match any of the rules defined for the subclient.

    4. Click OK.

  6. To define disk filters:

    1. On the VM Disk Filters tab of a backup set, or in the VM Disk Filters section on the Filters tab for a subclient, click Add.

    2. In the Add Disk Filter dialog box, select one of the following filter types and then enter the appropriate values:

      • Bus Type: Select IDE or SCSI from the list, and then enter the slot number in the Slot No. box.

      • Datastore: Click ... to browse and select a datastore.

      • Disk Name/Pattern: Enter a name or pattern for the disks to be excluded from backups.

        You can use wildcard characters when defining a rule based on a name or pattern.

  7. To modify a filter, select the filter and then click Edit.

  8. To remove a filter, select the filter and click Delete; then confirm the deletion request.

  9. Click OK.
