Defining Filters for Content

Filters can be configured to exclude virtual machines from backups. You can define filters on a subclient (only applies to that subclient) or on a backup set (applies to all subclients under the backup set).

For each subclient under a backup set, the filtering specified for the backup set is combined with the filtering for the subclient to determine which content is excluded from backups. Any filtering defined in a backup set is also visible in the subclients under the backup set when the Show Backupset Filters option is selected, and is applied at the subclient level even if backup set filters are not displayed.

Note

If a virtual machine is added by browsing and selecting the VM display name, discovery is performed based on the GUID for the VM. If that virtual machine is later restored in place from a backup, a new GUID is generated, and that virtual machine is no longer filtered from the backup. To filter that VM, you must remove the old filter rule, then add a new rule or use a name pattern for the filter.

Procedure

  1. From the CommCell Browser, expand Client Computers > virtualization_client > Virtual Server > RedHat.

  2. Right-click the backup set and then click Properties.

  3. In the Backup Set Property dialog box, click the VM Filters tab.

  4. To define a new filter for virtual machines, browse or define a rule:

    • To browse for objects:

      1. Click Browse.

      2. Select one or more objects to filter.

        You can select objects at any level to exclude virtual machines for the selected object. You can change the browse hierarchy by selecting a view from the list at the top left of the Browse dialog box.

      3. Click OK.

    • To define a rule:

      1. Click Add.

      2. In the Add Rule dialog box, click ... to browse for specific virtual machines or hosts, or select the filter type from the drop-down list and enter the appropriate values in the corresponding box.

        VM Name/Pattern

        Enter a pattern (for example, Test* to exclude VMs for which the VM name begins with "Test").

        Host

        Enter a RedHat host name or the IP address of a host. When you filter a host, all virtual machines for the host are automatically excluded from backups.

        Guest OS

        Enter a pattern to identify an operating system group. For example, you can enter Microsoft* to filter any virtual machine that has a version of the Windows operating system, *windows2012r2 to filter Windows 2012 R2 machines, or *linux* to filter all Linux machines.

        Guest DNS Hostname

        Enter a pattern to identify a hostname or domain (for example, myhost.mycompany.com to exclude a specific host or *.mycompany.com to exclude all hosts on that domain).

        Power State

        Select one of the following options to identify virtual machines:

        • Powered On - VMs that are powered on.

        • Powered Off - VMs that are powered off.

        • Other - VMs with a different power on status, such as Pause or Saved.

        Tag

        (Only for RHEV 4.0 or later) Enter a tag that is defined in RHEV-M that has been applied to virtual machines or hosts.

      3. Click OK.

    Click OK.

  5. To modify a filter, select the filter and then click Edit.

  6. To remove a filter, select the filter and click Delete; then confirm the deletion request.

  7. Click OK.
