Commvault uses the following components to support data protection and recovery operations:

CommServe host: Provides management, status, and reporting for protection operations. The CommServe user interface includes the CommCell Console and CommCell Browser.

Virtual Server Agent (VSA): The Virtual Server Agent can be installed on one or more machines, so that those machines can serve as VSA proxies. A VSA proxy manages backup and restore operations for guest VMs in your environment, eliminating the need to install agents on guest VMs.
The VSA can be installed on physical machines or Azure virtual machines. For best results, deploy the VSA proxy on a virtual machine in the Azure cloud. A VSA proxy for Azure Classic must have an Azure management certificate installed.
Deploying the VSA proxy on an Azure VM that is optimized for I/O intensive workloads will support faster backups. See Sizes for virtual machines in Azure for more information.
If the Azure subscription includes multiple regions, deploy at least one VSA proxy per region.

MediaAgents: MediaAgents can reside in Azure virtual machines or on servers in the physical environment. For best results, deploy the MediaAgent on a virtual machine in the Azure cloud. MediaAgents on the VSA proxy instance might provide better performance.

Web Console - If VM Lifecycle Management is configured, end users can use the Web Console to create and manage their own virtual machines. Administrators can create VM provisioning templates and policies to support self-service VM provisioning for end users.
You can deploy Commvault components on a single server or on different physical or virtual machines.
