Managing Subclients

When you create an instance, a default subclient is automatically created. The default subclient includes all the databases associated with that instance. If a new database is added to the instance, then that database is automatically assigned to the content of the default subclient.

You can also create user-defined subclients to backup individual or a group of databases. Always create separate subclients for large databases and small databases. Following are the advantages for creating separate subclients based on the size of the databases:

  • During a disaster recovery, when you need to quickly rebuild the entire instance, you can concurrently restore all the subclients with smaller databases together.

  • After a backup operation fails, you can restart the backup operation from the beginning of the database instead of starting from the beginning of the instance.

  • Backup failure of a subclient with smaller databases will not affect the backup operation of larger databases.

After the subclients are created, schedule frequent backup operations for dynamic data, and regular backup schedules for static data in the Sybase server.
