Microsoft Windows Server 2012, 2012 R2, and Windows 8.x: Considerations

AlwaysOn Provided by SQL 2012 or Later

AlwaysOn is a new implementation on clusters. You can protect the AlwaysOn configuration on your CommServe server and client computers.

CommServe Server

When you install the CommServe server on a Windows Server 2012 computer, consider removing third-party software that behaves like the Windows Start menu.

Windows Server 2012 and Windows 8 computers lack the Start menu feature from previous Windows versions. However, there are third-party tools (such as Start8) that behave like the Start menu. For the CommServe server to run smoothly on a Windows Server 2012 computer, disable these programs as they cause problems with the TCP/IP network.

Installing Windows File System Agent from the CommCell Console

Remote installs from the CommCell Console on a Windows 8 client fails when the client computer is not a part of a domain. To resolve this issue, enable User Account Control: Admin Approval Mode for the Built-in Administrator account in the client's Local Security Policy dialog box.

OnePass for Windows

You cannot view the offline stub icon for offline stubs on the local disks using the Windows Explorer.

Restore from Deduplicated Volumes

Windows Server 2012, Windows Server 2016, and Windows Server 2019 have a deduplication feature that can be enabled. Data, including the Windows deduplication data, from deduplicated volumes is backed up in its original state (uncompressed). Before performing a restore, verify that there is enough storage space on the volume to restore the full data size.

Virtual Server Agent (Microsoft Hyper-V)

The Microsoft Hyper-V Agent will back up all of the data on a Windows Server 2012 or 2012 R2 computer.

Windows File System Agent

The Change Journal scan method is not supported on Resilient File System (ReFS) volumes on Windows Server computers. The Recursive Scan or Optimized Scan method is used to back up data.
