Modifying a Silo Storage Backup Set

Deprecated

The archive data for cold storage on tape using deduplication (Silo) feature is deprecated.
See End-of-Life, Deprecated and Extended Support - Features for comprehensive information on deprecated features.

You can modify the data encryption and data compression settings on the on-demand backup set (silo storage backup set) to increase the security, integrity of the data, and the capacity of the silo storage.

About This Task

Silo storage provides data encryption options for data transmission over networks and for storage on media. When data is migrated to offsite storage, data encryption increases the security and integrity of the data.

Deduplicated data on the primary copy is by default stored in compressed format by default, but it can also be stored in its original form. If compressed, then data copied to silo storage is also compressed, effectively increasing the capacity of a silo storage (depending on the nature of the data). Software compression allows you to have the data in the primary storage in its original form, and enable data compression when the data is migrated to Silo Storage. You can enable either software or hardware compression of data from the source copy.

If hardware compression in enabled, then software compression is ignored during silo backups.

Before You Begin

To enable data encryption on the silo storage subclient, you must enable data encryption on the CommServe client.

For more information, see Client Encryption.

Procedure

  1. From the CommCell Browser, expand Client Computers > CommServe_client> silo_BackupSet_StoragePolicyName_StoragePolicyCopyName.

  2. Right-click the default subclient and then click Properties.

  3. On the Encryption tab of the Subclient Properties dialog box, select the appropriate encryption options.

For a detailed description of options, see Encryption.

  4. On the Storage Device tab, click the Data Transfer Options tab, under Software Compression, select the appropriate compression settings.

For more information, see Data Transfer Options.

  5. Click OK.
