Modifying a Subclient for Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization

When a new RedHat instance is created, a defaultBackupSet and default subclient are automatically generated.

When first created, the default subclient includes the entry '\' on the Content properties to represent "All unprotected VMs," ensuring that all virtual machines from the configured Red Hat data center will be backed up if they are not covered by another subclient. Best practice is to leave this entry in the default subclient, and to create additional user-defined subclients as needed to manage different groups of virtual machines separately.

Do not modify the content for all default subclients. At least one default subclient should have the capability to serve as a catch-all entity for Red Hat virtual machines. If you disable this feature for all default subclients, some virtual machines in the data center may not get backed up.

To perform backups using the default subclient, you need to assign a new or existing storage policy to the subclient. The storage policy identifies a library that stores backup data.

You can also set advanced options to configure the number of data readers, associate VMs in the subclient with a client computer group, and include or exclude VSA proxies.

Procedure

1. From the CommCell Browser, expand Client Computers > virtualization_client > Virtual Server > RedHat> DefaultBackupSet.

2. Right-click the default subclient and then click Properties.

   The Subclient Properties dialog box is displayed.

3. Click the Storage Device tab.

4. Select a storage policy from the Storage Policy list.

   If necessary, click Create Storage Policy to create a new storage policy for the subclient.

5. Click the Advanced Options tab to configure any of the following options:

   • Number of Data Readers - Specifies the number of simultaneous backup data streams allowed for the subclient.

   • Select VM Client Group - Select an existing client computer group from the list to add all virtual machines for the subclient to the group. When a group is assigned for a subclient, the assignment is performed during virtual machine discovery, and replaces any previous VM assignments for the group.

6. Proxies - By default, the backup of any virtual machine is performed by one of the proxies assigned to the virtualization client instance. The first proxy in the list (the coordinator proxy) distributes virtual machines across the available proxies for the virtualization client. You can add, remove, or change the sequence of proxies to be used for backups of virtual machines in the subclient. Proxies specified at the subclient level override the proxy list at the instance level. Only proxies that match the type of the virtualization client are displayed.

7. Click OK.
