Optimize Storage Space Using Deduplication Across Multiple Storage Policies (Global Deduplication)

Global deduplication policy provides a common deduplication database (DDB) that can be shared by multiple storage policy copies. Global deduplication allows data from multiple copies to be deduplicated against each other, eliminating redundant data between the copies.

Use a Global deduplication policy in the following cases:

  • Storage Policies have Different Retention Rules

You are using multiple storage policy copies that share the same data paths but have different retention rules.

  • You plan to deduplicate Remote Site Backups

If your setup includes multiple remote sites with their own MediaAgents and clients in several locations and has a centralized data center. Each remote site backs up the internal data by using individual storage policies and saves a copy of the backup both locally and on the centralized data center.

You can eliminate the redundant data within the individual sites by using global deduplication with the primary copies at the remote site. Similarly, the secondary copies stored at the data center can contain redundant data among different copies, which can be eliminated by using global deduplication with the secondary copies. Because the copies are deduplicated by using the same DDB, they are deduplicated against each other, which eliminates any redundancy in the backup at the data center.

To set up global deduplication for remote office backups, complete the following process:

    1. Create a Global Deduplication Policy

You must create a deduplication policy at the data center site.

    2. Create a Storage Policy with Deduplication

Enable a storage policy for each MediaAgent at the remote office site.

    3. Create a Storage Policy Copy with Global Deduplication

Create the secondary copies by using the global deduplication policy.
