Performing a Direct Access Restore

Does Not Apply To: Snap restore and NRE restore

Direct Access restores optimize the restore operations by allowing the file server to directly access the backed up data anywhere in the media without having to traverse the media sequentially. By default, all restore operations use the direct access restore process.

If the data to be restored is less than 30-40% of the backup, perform a direct access restore. For example, if you are restoring 25-30 files from a backup that contains 100 files, you can use this option. However, disable this option when you restore a major portion of the backup.

  1. From the CommCell Console, go to Client Computers > client > NDMP.

  2. Right-click the backup set, and then click All Tasks > Browse and Restore.

  3. Click View Content.

  4. Select the data that you want to restore, and then click Recover All Selected.

  5. Click Advanced.

The Advanced Restore Options dialog box appears.

  6. On the NAS Options tab, click one of the following under Use Direct Access Restore:

    • ON: With this option enabled, restore will search only the specified files within a backup stream and then restore each file separately instead of searching the whole backup stream. It is recommended to use this option when you restore a smaller portion (30-40%) of the backup.

    • OFF: With this option enabled, NDMP server will search the whole backup stream and restore the specified files. It is recommended to use this option when you restore a major portion of the backup.

  7. Click OK.
