Performing an Oracle Full Backup

You can use this procedure to back up the entire database and the control file. Backups of online databases also include the log file. You can also use this procedure if you want to back up using the Oracle logical dump utility.

Tip: After you install the Oracle Agent, perform a full backup to verify the configuration.

A full backup is the most comprehensive backup and is the baseline for incremental backups.

You can use tags to uniquely identify a backup. The Oracle tag that you specify for the backup overrides the tag defined for the subclient. You can use the tags to specify the backup to use for a restore operation.

Important

If you have configured RMAN backup optimization for an Oracle instance, then the Commvault software permanently turns off optimization the first time that you perform a full backup or selective online full backup from the CommCell Console. This behavior ensures that the backups contain all the Oracle data files and that you can successfully restore the backups.

Before You Begin

Configure an offline, online, pluggable database or datafile subclient.

If the database is in NOARCHIVELOG mode, you must back up the database offline.

If the database is in ARCHIVELOG mode and database accessibility is a priority, perform an online backup of the database.

Procedure

  1. From the CommCell Browser, expand Client Computers > client> Oracle >instance.

  2. Right-click the subclient and click Backup.

  3. On the Backup Options for Subclient dialog box, select the backup type and job initiation:

    1. In the Backup Type section, select Full.

    2. In the Job Initiation section, specify whether to run the backup now or if it will be scheduled.

      Note

      If you selected Schedule, set up the schedule.

  4. Optional: Select advanced backup options.

    1. Click Advanced.

      The Advanced Backup Options dialog box appears.

    2. On the Oracle Options tab, in the Backup Tag box, enter a unique tag.

      You can include variables in the tag. For supported tag variables, see Oracle Tag Variables.

    3. To set the maximum number of megabytes (MB) per second that the software reads during the backup operation, in the Throttle RMAN disk read (MB/sec) box, type the number of megabytes. For more information, see Advanced Backup Options.

    4. Click OK to close the Advanced Backup Options dialog box.

  5. Optional: Set the backup load distribution across disks to improve performance. For more information, see Configuring the Disk Ratio for Oracle RMAN.

  6. Optional: View or customize the RMAN script that is generated from the selected options. For instructions, see Viewing Oracle Backup RMAN Scripts and Customizing Oracle Backup RMAN Scripts.

  7. Click OK to close the Backup Options dialog box.
