You can restore full virtual machines, virtual machine disk files, or individual guest files and folders from a virtual machine backup.
Restores are supported for both Windows and Linux clients.
Restore Types
When restoring Hyper-V data, you can select one of the following restore types:

Full Virtual Machine
Use this restore type to restore entire virtual machines.
This restore type is selected by default. Use this restore type in the following situations:

When the original virtual machine is unusable.

To restore an entire virtual machine to a specific point in time.

To restore a virtual machine to a new Hyper-V host.

Virtual Machine Files
Use this restore type to restore Virtual Hard Disk (VHD) and VHDX (a Hyper-V virtual hard disk (VHD)) files from a virtual machine. This restore type will be useful in the following situations:

The virtual machine is running, but one of its disk has errors.

The storage device that hosts the disks has errors or not available.

Guest Files or Folders
Use this restore type to restore files or folders from a virtual machine. Use this restore type in the following situations:

You cannot open the original file or folder.

You want to restore a file or a folder from a specific point in time.
You can restore files and folders to the source VM, to a physical client, or to a VM with an appropriate agent installed.

Windows Server 2016 and Later
Restores cannot modify configuration files directly. For restores, the Virtual Server Agent imports the virtual machine from the backup and modifies the VM configuration after importing the VM (for example, attaching restored disks and reconfiguring networks). This type of restore is also supported for Windows Server 2012 R2 nodes.
