Running Iometer on a Windows Computer

You can run Iometer on a Windows system computer.

1. On the Windows computer, navigate to the software_installation_directory/Base folder, and then right-click Iometer > Run as Administrator.

   A license dialog box appears.

2. Click I Agree.

   The Iometer application window appears.

3. In the Topology pane, click the name of the machine that you are testing.

   The machine's available disk drives appear in the Disk Targets tab.

4. Click the plus symbol (+) next to the machine name to show all Worker threads. Iometer, on startup, creates one Manager with multiple worker threads.

   Note

   This procedure describes how to set up and run Iometer with one worker thread. A worker thread is an entity that runs the test defined on the Access Specification Tab of the Iometer User Interface.

5. Leave Worker 1, but delete the remaining worker threads by selecting one and then clicking the Disconnect Selected Worker or Manager button . Repeat for all remaining worker threads.

   Note

   Iometer should be run on the physical disk where the index cache directory is to be located. Iometer allows physical disks to be selected only when there are no volumes on the disk.

6. Click the Disk Targets tab.

   1. Click the disk or volume that you want to test.

      Notes

      • Before running a test on a volume, Iometer prepares the volume by creating the file named iobw.tst, on which it will run read/write tests.

      • Yellow disk icons with a red strike-through are volumes that need to be prepared before the test. These are the volumes that do not contain the iobw.tst file.

      • Yellow disk icons without a red strike-through already contain the iobw.tst file.

      • Blue disk icons represent physical drives that have no partitions on them.

   2. Set Maximum Disk Size and Starting Disk Sector to 0 (zero), in order to test the complete disk.

7. Click the Access Specifications tab.

   1. In the Global Access Specifications area, select the Iometer profile to be used for the IOPS measurement test. The following profile most closely emulates the way c-tree accesses a disk during database lookups:

      4K Block Size, 100% Access, 100% Random, 50% Read and 50% Write

      Note

      If this profile does not already exist, create it by clicking New, entering the specifications for the profile, and then clicking OK.

   2. Click the Add button to place the profile in the Assigned Access Specifications area.

8. Click the Results Display tab, and then set the Update Frequency to 5 seconds.

9. Click the Test Setup tab, and then set the Run Time to 30 minutes.

10. Click the Start Tests button .

    A Save File dialog box appears.

11. Enter a file name to store the test results (by default it saves as results.csv), and then click Save.

    The Results Display tab will display.

12. Allow the test to run until the Total I/Os per Second stabilizes in the Results Display tab.

13. Click the Stop Test button .

    The test will stop, and the final results will be saved to the file you specified in Step 10, above.

    At the end of the test, note the IOPS test rating.

14. If you are running Iometer on a volume, delete the iobw.tst file after the test is complete.
