System Requirements for the Dell EMC PowerMax/VMAX3/VMAX/Symmetrix Storage Array

Before you configure your storage array, verify that your environment meets the following requirements.

Licenses

Install the following licenses:

  • Solutions Enabler Licensing and BASE/Symmetrix license for all snapshot types

Note

You can use the following command to check the licenses on the host computer:

C:\SYMAPI\Config> type symapi_licenses.dat

  • Fibre Channel

  • iSCSI for TimeFinder SnapVX only

  • FCoE (Fibre Channel over Ethernet)

Dell EMC VMAX

  • Fibre Channel

  • FCoE (Fibre Channel over Ethernet)

Dell EMC Symmetrix

  • Fibre Channel

  • FCoE (Fibre Channel over Ethernet)

Version and Firmware

Use the following version and firmware.

Tip

For IntelliSnap to function appropriately, LUN masking records and views must be accessible from the host where the backup takes place.

  • For DMX, the masking and mapping record for VCMDB (Volume Control Manager Database) must be accessible on the host executing the backup.

  • For Dell EMC VMAX, a masking view must be created for the host executing the backup or the proxy computer where the snap is mounted.

Software

Install the following software.

Notes

  • By default, all functionality is already enabled in the Dell EMC PowerMax/VMAX3/VMAX/Symmetrix hardware layer. However, a Hardware Configuration File (IMPL) must be enabled before using the array. Contact an EMC Representative to ensure TimeFinder and Symmetrix Remote Data Facility (SRDF) functionalities have been properly configured.

  • From V11 SP14, cascade storage group in the array is supported only for the Dell EMC TimeFinder SnapVX engine. The parent storage group of a cascade storage group must be associated to a masking view.

Array

Required Software

Dell EMC PowerMAX, VMAX All Flash, and VMAX3

  • Solutions Enabler 8.x or later on client and proxy computers or on Remote MA

Dell EMC VMAX

  • Solutions Enabler 7.2 or later, including 8.x,on client and proxy computers

  • For the TimeFinder VP Snap engine, Solutions Enabler 7.6.2.8 or later on client and proxy computers

  • For the Dell EMC TimeFinder SnapVX engine, Solutions Enabler 8.x or later on the SMI-S control host

  • Client Components (SYMCLI) are required only during the initial one-time configuration. Base Components (with SYMAPI) are required for all snapshot operations

  • SYMCLI and SYMAPI do not need to be installed on source host when the Remote Snap MediaAgent is configured

  • If EMC Solutions Enabler installer is not available for a specific 32 bit platform, use the Remote Snap MediaAgent installed on a different platform

Dell EMC Symmetrix

  • Solutions Enabler 6.4 or later on client and proxy computers

  • Client Components (SYMCLI) are required only during the initial one-time configuration. Base Components (with SYMAPI) are required for all snap operations

  • SYMCLI and SYMAPI do not need to be installed on source host when Remote Snap MediaAgent is configured for VMAX

Ports

For snapshot operations, open ports 5988 (no SSL) and 5989 (SSL) between the server computers, MediaAgents, and client computers.
