Feature Release 23

All

You cannot run a synthetic full backup job if no incremental or differential backups were run after the last full or synthetic full backup.

If you do try to run a synthetic full backup under these circumstances, the following happens:

  • If you try running a manual synthetic full backup, you will get an error message.

  • If the synthetic full backup is scheduled, the system will not run the job.

Feature Release 23

File system and VM agents

The system will run an automatic synthetic full backup job only if all of the following conditions are true:

  • The current application size is greater than or equal to 1 GB

  • The sum of the sizes of the backup jobs in the current cycle is greater than or equal to 1 GB

  • The sum of the sizes of the backup jobs in the current cycle is greater than the current application size by more than 50%

Feature Release 23

1-Touch Recovery for Windows and Virtualize Me for Windows

1-Touch ISO applications are now renamed to Base ISO and Physical ISO.

Base ISO file, for example, 1-Touch Windows Live CD with 11.21, is now renamed to Virtual ISO.

Dell ISO file and HP ISO file are now combined and renamed to Physical ISO.

Feature Release 23

Microsoft SQL Server

To back up SQL server on Linux clients, you must have ODBC driver 17.x installed on the Linux client.

Previously, the agent supported SQL server Linux clients with ODBC driver 13.x and above.

Note

The ODBC18 driver is not supported. If the ODBC18 driver is installed with a newer version of SQL Server, uninstall it and replace it with the ODBC17 version.

The 17.10.5.1 driver is not recommended as it may introduce delays in processing VDI calls.

Feature Release 23

NDMP

For vendors who support backing up from a vendor snapshot, the default setting on subclients and new schedule policies is to enable backing up from the snapshot.

Previously, users had to manually enable backing up from a vendor snapshot.

Feature Release 23

NDMP

On NetApp filers with version ONTAP 9.8, restartable backups (BRE extension) and exclude filters are supported on FlexGroup Volumes.

Feature Release 23

OneNote

You can run OneDrive backups to back up both the OneNote files and the OneDrive files together.

Previously, by default, OneNote files were not backed up along with the OneDrive files. We used OneNote API to back up the OneNote files.

Feature Release 23

Windows File System

On the Content tab, the Only with Full Backup checkbox is removed for new Windows subclients that use Indexing V2, and for existing subclients that do not have the checkbox selected.

Feature Release 23

SAP HANA

When restoring multitenant databases on SAP HANA 2.0 SPS04 (and onwards) using IntelliSnap backups, after you recover one tenant database, the remaining tenant databases are recovered automatically.

Previously, you must recover the remaining databases to the most recent state using HDBSQL commands.

Feature Release 23

CommCell Console

In the CommCell Console, you cannot modify the entities that are associated with the schedule policies of a server plan.

However, in the Command Center, you can modify the entities that are associated with a server plan. This capability exists because, starting in Feature Release 23, entities are associated with server plans rather than with server plan schedule policies.

Also, if you modified the associated entities for a server plan schedule policy in the CommCell Console before Feature Release 23, those modified entities are retained as clones of the original server plan schedule policy when you upgrade the Commvault software to Feature Release 23.

Feature Release 23

Company

Service providers can now set the showRestoreCopiesForTenants additional setting to allow tenant administrators and tenant users to restore virtual machines and file servers using copy precedence from the Command Center.

Previously, the copy precedence option was visible by default when tenant administrators and tenant users performed a restore.

Feature Release 23

CommServe

The AuditDB database and the TemplateDB database are removed from the CommCell environment.

Feature Release 23

DR Backup

With Maintenance Release 11.23.29, and above, the primary copy of the DR storage policy is converted to a WORM copy to prevent accidental deletion of data that is not qualified for aging. In addition, when you create a new DR storage policy, the default retention period is set to 15 days and 15 cycles. (The retention period for existing DR storage policies continues to use the existing settings and is not affected by this change.)

Feature Release 23

Network Share

You can use SnapDiff for faster incremental backups of non-IntelliSnap backups of network shares. SnapDiff is a NetApp feature that identifies which files changed between snapshots, so that backup operations do not have to traverse all files to determine which files have changed.

Feature Release 23

Object Storage

From 11.23, when you add an object storage repository, you can use the Credential Manager. When you create an object storage repository, the Credential Manager maintains the credentials of different types of authentication methods.

When you upgrade to FR 11.23 or later, existing object storage credentials will be automatically converted to a Credential Manager entity. All cloud credentials used for object storage instance creation are maintained by the Credential Manager.

Feature Release 23

Deduplication Database

Earlier, when you create a storage pool, the software creates new DDBs for three different data types - virtual machines, databases, and file system agents. Any new subclients are associated to a DDB based on their data type.

The behavior is changed as follows:

When you create a storage pool with deduplication, the software creates one DDB. When you perform a backup operation to the storage pool, the software renames the existing DDB based on the data type of the subclients.

The software also renames the DDBs that exist before you enable horizontal scaling. However, the existing subclients of all data types still backup to the renamed current DDB. When you perform a backup operation for a subclient of different data type, the software creates a new DDB for the data type. Any new subclients are associated to a DDB based on their data type.

Media Management Configuration: Deduplication

Feature Release 23

Data Retention

When you configure WORM storage mode on cloud storage, the data retention at the cloud storage level is calculated as follows:

For associated deduplication-enabled storage pools, retention at the bucket/container level is the sum of the value at the storage policy copy level and the DDB seal frequency value on the cloud. The seal frequency is set to either a maximum of 180 days or half the retention days of the storage policy copy, whichever is greater. For example, if the retention is set for 60 days at the storage policy copy level, the seal frequency is set to 180 days, and then at the cloud storage level, the retention is set for 60+180=240 days. If the retention at the storage policy copy level is 2 years, then the seal frequency is set to 1 year, and the cloud storage level retention is set to 2 +1=3 years.

Feature Release 23

Block Size in Storage Policy Copy

The default block size for write operations on tape devices is increased to256 KB. (Previously, the default size was 64 KB.) Block sizes can be modified from the Data Path Properties dialog box available in the Copy Properties (Data Paths) tab.

Feature Release 23

All hypervisors

The following errors now cause VM backup jobs to display as Completed in the Job Details page and Completed with warnings on the Virtualization dashboard:

  • Unsupported disks

  • Guest quiesce failure

  • File detail (metadata) collection failure

Review any of the related Troubleshooting articles to resolve these issues.

Previously, VM backup jobs that encountered these failures reported as Completed with errors.
