Adding a Hyper-V Hypervisor

Add a Hyper-V hypervisor to support data protection operations for all virtual machines hosted or managed by the hypervisor.

Before You Begin

  • Verify that the VSA package is installed on the CommServe computer.

  • Verify that the Hyper-V access nodes can communicate with the CommServe computer. If the access nodes reside behind a firewall or if the CommServe server is running UNIX, register the access nodes to the CommServe computer by installing the VSA package with the required firewall settings on each of the access nodes.

Though you have registered these nodes to the Commserve computer, you must complete the entire procedure to add a hypervisor.

  • You will need the following information to add a hypervisor:

    • The hypervisor can be a Hyper-V cluster, a Hyper-V server in a cluster, or a standalone Hyper-V server.

Be prepared to enter credentials for the Hyper-V server or cluster. The user must belong to the Hyper-V administrators group for the Hyper-V Server 2012 and later. For a Hyper-V cluster, the user account must have full cluster permissions (Read and Full Control).

      Note

For a single node Hyper-V setup, the account does not need to be part of the Hyper-V administrators group for Hyper-V Server 2012 and later.

    • Also identify one or more nodes on which you will install the VSA to create proxies for backup and restore operations.

Procedure

  1. From the Command Center navigation pane, go to Protect > Virtualization.

    The Overview page appears.

  2. On the Hypervisors tab, in the upper-right corner of the page, click Add hypervisor.

The Add hypervisor dialog box appears.

  3. For Select vendor, select Hyper-V.

  4. For Hostname/IP address, type the fully qualified domain name or IP address for the hypervisor.

  5. For Hypervisor name, type a descriptive name for the hypervisor.

  6. To provide access to the hypervisor, choose one of the following:

    Enter credentials

If you select this option, for Username and Password, enter the user credentials to provide administrative access to the hypervisor.

    Create a new user credential

To create a new credential (with Windows account type), click +. Enter the name of the new credential and the user name and password to provide administrative access to the hypervisor. For more information, see Credential Manager.

  7. Click Discover nodes.

Nodes will contain a list of discovered nodes.

  8. Select the nodes that you want to install the Virtual Server Agent on.

For a Hyper-V cluster, or to use Changed Block Tracking for Hyper-V 2012 R2, select all nodes in the Hyper-V cluster.

  9. Click Save.

You can install the Commvault System Center plug-in to manage backups and recovery of Hyper-V virtual machines from within System Center.

For more information, see Installing and Launching the System Center Plug-In.
