Adding a VM Group for Oracle Cloud Infrastructure

Add a VM group to identify a specific set of instances to back up or restore.

Before You Begin

  • Define a backup plan that specifies the storage, retention, and backup schedule to be used for the VM group.

  • To select instances based on views or automatic discovery rules, see "Views and Rule Options" (below).

Procedure

  1. From the Command Center navigation pane, go to Protect > Virtualization.

    The Overview page appears.

  2. Click the VM groups tab.

    The VM group page appears.

  3. Click Add VM group.

The Add VM group dialog box appears.

  4. Provide the following information:

    • Hypervisor: Select the hypervisor.

    • Plan: Select the backup plan.

    • Name: Type a descriptive name for the VM group.

    • To add instances to the new VM group manually, do the following:

      1. Click Add > Content.

        The Add content screen appears.

      2. In Browse and select VMs, do one of the following:

      3. Select Region View to show regions.

      4. Select Instance View to show instances.

      5. Select Tag View to show tags. All of the available tag namespaces are shown first, followed by tag keys and tag values.

        Note

If you want to select Tag View, you must first create these values in Oracle Cloud.

      6. Expand the instance trees to select the content for the VM group.

        Note

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure allows the creation of sub-compartments up to six levels deep. Beginning in Feature Release 11.26, you can back up and restore instances that are under those sub-compartments (as well as under the root compartment) for OCI regions.

    • You can also define a rule to discover instances automatically, as follows:

      1. Click Add > Rule.

      2. For Match rule, select any or all.

      3. From the Instance name or pattern list, select Compartment, Instance, Instance name or pattern, Tag key, Tag namespace, or Tag value.

        Note

If you want to select Tag key, Tag namespace, or Tag value, you must first create these values in Oracle Cloud.

      4. From the middle list, select Equals, Contains, Does not contain, Does not equal, Ends with, or Starts with.

      5. Enter a value for the rule you are creating.

      6. Click OK.

  5. Click Submit to save the VM group.

VM groups are created with default settings for backup options. To change default settings, see Editing VM Group Settings for Oracle Cloud Infrastructure.

Views and Rule Options

When you define content for a VM group, you can change the view and select specific entities, or define rules to automatically select instances that meet specific criteria.

Views

When you browse to select instances for VM group content or filters, you can select a browse method from the Browse and select VMs list, and then expand the tree below the list to select instances for the VM group, or to clear previous selections.

You can select the following option from the list to control the browse display:

  • VMs: Select instances to be backed up.

Note

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure allows the creation of sub-compartments up to six levels deep. Beginning in Feature Release 11.26, you can back up and restore instances that are under those sub-compartments (as well as under the root compartment) for OCI regions.

Rules

You can define rules to discover instances automatically.

When you add a rule, from the Select rule for list, choose one of the following rules and then, from the Which matches with list, select Equals, Contains, Starts with, or Ends with:

  • Compartment: In the Name box, type the name of a compartment.

  • Instance: In the Name box, select the instance.

  • Instance name/pattern: In the Name box, type the display name of the instance or a pattern using wildcards (for example, Test* to identify instances for which the instance name begins with "Test").
