The Remote Snap MA property specifies a remote MediaAgent computer to run snapshot operations on the storage array instead of on the MediaAgent computer in the local host. This remote MediaAgent computer is called the Remote Snap MediaAgent. this property does not affect the previous snapshots.
Remote Snap MA Property Usage Scenarios
Use the Remote Snap MA property to specify a Remote Snap MediaAgent computer in the following scenarios:
-
When the MediaAgent is behind a firewall.
-
When replicating snapshots and the access nodes of the source array do not have access to the destination array.
-
For Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP arrays, the Commvault uses the array access node for the Array configuration even if you configure the Remote Snap MediaAgent.
The configuration of Remote Snap MediaAgent is supported at Array level only. For more information, see Editing Snapshot Configuration of Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP.
-
For Dell EMC PowerMax/VMAX3/VMAX/Symmetrix arrays or for Dell EMC VNX / CLARiiON arrays, when you need to overcome the limited number of gatekeepers per MediaAgent.
-
For Hitachi Vantara arrays, when the array has only a limited number of command devices for each MediaAgent.
-
For Dell EMC VMAX arrays, when the client computer and the Storage Management Initiative Specification (SMI-S) control host are in different networks and the client computer cannot communicate directly with the SMI-S control host.
-
For NetApp arrays, the software uses the array access node for the following features even if you configure the Remote Snap MediaAgent:
-
Array configuration
-
SnapManagement tool
-
NDMP and network share backups
-
Secondary volume cleanup for OCUM/ActiveIQ Unified Manager based snapshot replication
The software does not support using Remote Snap MediaAgent or array access node to perform archiving operations. The configuration of Remote Snap MediaAgent is supported at Array level only. For more information, see Editing the Properties of the NetApp Array.

HPE 3PAR StoreServ / Primera / HPE Alletra 9000 Series / HPE GreenLake for Block
Note
-
If the HPE 3PAR StoreServ /Primera / HPE Alletra 9000 Series / HPE GreenLake for Block is the backend storage array of the Dell EMC VPLEX storage array, then the Remote MediaAgent computer on the backend HPE 3PAR StoreServ / Primera / HPE Alletra 9000 Series / HPE GreenLake for Block array is NOT supported.
-
For the HPE 3PAR StoreServ / Primera / HPE Alletra 9000 Series / HPE GreenLake for Block storage array, you can select multiple MediaAgents as Remote Snap MediaAgents.
If you have an environment with multiple CommCell Consoles, then you must use the Commvault Platform Release 2024 version of the CommCell Console to configure multiple Remote Snap MediaAgents.
