Note
For environments less than 500 mailboxes, all the Exchange Mailbox Agent components can be installed on the same machine.

Mailbox Access Node & CI (Content Indexing) Access node:
Mailbox access node is required for archive and cleanup operations. The Exchange package must be installed on the mailbox access node.

CI access node is required for content indexing operations as well as search based on message content and attachment content. The Web Server or Index Gateway package must be installed on the Mailbox Access node for CI operations.

You must install the Microsoft Outlook package on the mailbox access node.

Index Store:
You must install the Index Store package for performing indexing, search, and analytics functions. The metadata and CI data is stored in the index store.

Web Console:
Web Console is required for end user access.
It is recommended to configure the Web Console in the perimeter network (DMZ) so that the internal and external users can access the Web Console. For more information, see Web Console Overview.

Mailbox archiving operations:
Mailbox archiving operations protects emails without creating stubs for those emails.

Mailbox cleanup operations:
Mailbox cleanup operations creates stubs for successfully backed up emails.

Web Server:
You must install both Microsoft Outlook and the Content Extractor package on the Web Server client to leverage email recall services.
