The File System Backup Quota feature lets administrators manage backup storage that file systems consume by setting backup quotas for client owners. A quota is a limit to the amount of data that a client owner can back up. Administrators can assign quotas to external or CommCell users and user groups, so that the setting applies to client owners who are members of one or more such groups. They can also set a quota for an individual client owner if appropriate. These quotas apply across multiple clients if a user owns more than one.
Notifications
File System Backup Quota enforces quotas set by administrative staff by actively notifying the administrators and users through automated email messages, and preventing further backups of clients owned by over-quota users. Notification messages are sent according to these rules:
-
When the total of all file system data backed up for a client owner is more than 90 percent of that owner's quota (but not more than 10 percent over the quota), the system sends a warning.
-
When the total of all file system data backed up for a client owner exceeds the client owner's quota by 10 percent or more, the system sends an alert.
Important: The first client backup job that results in sending either a warning or an alert starts a 24-hour timer. No additional warnings or alerts are sent to any of the owners of that client until 24 hours have passed.
Enforcement
At the beginning of a backup job, the system checks the quota limit information. Client computers whose owners have exceeded their quota (see Quota and Usage Calculations) by 10 percent or more are not backed up until some files or folders are deleted from backup storage by deleting files using File System End-User Delete, or the administrator increases the owner's quota.
You can configure to perform the quota check during running jobs at the archive index phase. For more information, see Configuring Quota Check at Archive Indexing Phase.
Monitoring Backup Storage Usage
Administrators can monitor storage consumption through the File System Quota Usage Report, which provides file system backup storage use information.
File System Agents Supported
File System iDataAgent types that support the File System Quota feature include Microsoft Windows, Unix/Linux and Macintosh. See File System Backup Quota - Support for details.
Important: The File System Backup Quota feature is supported only for new V11 client computers or upgraded clients that have converted to the latest version of indexing. This feature is not supported for clients using previous versions of the software or Indexing Version 1. For more information about indexing, see Indexing.
